Evaluation of hypoglycemic activities of Peruvian medicinal plants
Universidad Ricardo Palma (URP)
Pharmacology laboratory of the Ricardo Palma University
Dra. Hilda Jurupe
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
The WHO Expert Committee on diabetes recommended further evaluation of the folkloric methods of managing this disease because of the high mortality and morbidity arising from its attendant complications and problems associated with the use of conventional antidiabetic agents.Phyllanthus niruri Linn. is widespread in the tropical regions of the world, including the AmazonRainforest. What is the aim of the project?
Determine the hypoglycemic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of the leaves of Phyllanthus niruri "Chanca piedra".
What techniques and methods are used?
Preparing extract, induction of experimental treatment, management diabetes and further statistical analysis of the results.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The incoming will be part of a team integrated by medical students and lead by an experimental coach, with whom the methodological part of the study will be developed starting from collecting the plant from its indigenous source, through the preparation of the animal material to the realization of the experimental phase. For which a laboratory with necessary equipment will be procured. Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)

What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a presentation - The student will prepare an abstract
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
