Study on the sandfly fauna in a Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis foci in Florianopolis (SC): Evaluation of vector competence in naturally infected sandfly species
Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC)
Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology department of UFSC.
Professor Celia Regina Monte Barardi
Professor Mario Steindel
English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Human visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil is caused by Leishmania infantum syn L. chagasi and around 3,500human cases are reported annually. Dogs are the main urban reservoirs of the parasite and Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is usually followed by outbreaks in humans. Since year 2010 Florianopolis is a new endemic area CVL and more than 107 infected dogs have been reported since them. The presence of the classic LV vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis has not been recorded there, but other sand fly species Lu. fischeri, Mg. migonei and Ny. neivai have been reported. We are interested to determinate the vectorial capacity of local sand fly species to transmit L. infantum.
What is the aim of the project?
The main aim of the project is to identify the vectorial capacity of local sand fly and detection and isolation of the parasite from dogs and humans on the island of Santa Catarina.
What techniques and methods are used?
Indirect Immunofluorescence, PCR, culture will be used.
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Student will be involved in practical skills such as insect capture, Insect identification, DNA extraction, PCR, Electrophoresis, etc
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Students should be interested on the subject, curious and hard worker.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
