Identification of molecular and cellular features to personalize immunosuppressive and antileukemic therapy in pediatric patients.
Universita degli Studi di Trieste
Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste, Pharmacogenomics laboratory, via Flemi
Prof Giannino Del Sal
Prof. Giuliana Decorti, dr. Gabriele
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
A number of very effective immunosuppressive and antileukemic drugs have been introduced in recent years; the effectiveness of these drugs is however very variable and side effects, particularly severe in pediatric patients, are common and often unpredictable.
What is the aim of the project?
To identify and develop molecular and cellular features that can be used to personalize immunosuppressive and antileukemic therapy in pediatric patients; with a combination of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenomic approaches the group studies the role and interconnection of these features and their association with patients
What techniques and methods are used?
Molecular biology techniques, cell cltures and a bioinformatic approach will be used, in particular: high performance liquid chromatography to measure drug concentrations and enzymatic activities, DNA extraction and genotyping (PCR-RFLP, PCR allele specific, TaqMan assays), primary and stabilized cell coltures, proliferation and cytotoxicity assayes, gene overexpression, western blot, RNA extraction, qPCR, non-coding RNA (miRNA and long-non- coding RNA) extraction, processing and quantification, RNAseq, cytofluorimetry, data analysis with R.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks of the student will be performed on his/her own
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
In case the student's work should lead to the achievement of interesting data, these will be the subject of a scientific paper or congress presentations.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The student will be given some scientific paper, useful to provide the theoretical basis of the research.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
No special skills are required, but curiosity and interest in research and willingness to deepen the knowledge of scientific problems.
For the use of students considering participating in the project, further information can be found from the following articles:
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months)
