Study of relationship between changes in visual field according to standard automated perimetry and structure of optic nerve
Russian Federation (HCCM Russia) - South Ural State Medical University, Chelyabinsk
Department of Ophtalmology of South Ural State Medical University
Vadim S, Rykun, MD, PhD, Prof. / Artyom V. Vlasenko
Elena V. Tur, MD, PhD
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
This project was designed for investigation of relationship between changes in visual field according to standard automated perimetry (SAP) and structure of optic nerve according to optic coherent tomography (OCT) in patients with different stages of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
What is the aim of the project?
To study relationship between changes in visual field according to standard automated perimetry and structure of optic nerve according to optic coherent tomography in patients with different stages of primary open-angle glaucoma
What techniques and methods are used?
Throughout the project all patients with POAG will be examined using following examination technics: visometry (evaluation of visual acuity), tonometry (evaluation of intraocular pressure), perimetry (evaluation of visual field) using SAP, OCT of optic nerve, gonioscopy (evaluation of angle of anterior chamber of eye), biomicroscopy (evaluation of anterior segment of eye) and fundoscopy (evaluation of eye fundus). Statistical analysis will be done using standard descriptive statistics and correlation.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
- If the project is clinical
- the student will take active part in the clinical examination
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will help ophthalmologist to examine patients, analyze SAP and OCT of optic nerve data, maintain a database and perform statistical analysis.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Some lectures and seminars will be provided to familiarize students with general eye anatomy, anatomy of eye drainage system, pathogenesis of POAG, theoretical basis of OCT and SAP and other specific ophthalmological methods of examination.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Basic knowledge of eye anatomy an physiology and methods of eye examinations. Better to pass exam in Ophthalmology in student
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months)
