What is the background of the project?
Essential Oil of Citrus limon (EOCL), is found in the skin and leaves of limon (Sicilian lime). OECL has received great interest in the field alternative medicine, as it mediates a broad range of biological activities with multisystem benefits. These comprise anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies in animal models of brain injury and neurological diseases have advanced the idea that EOCL is an effective neuroprotective compound. Here, we propose a pre-clinical study to discern the efficacy of EOCL for easing status epilepticus (SE) induced hippocampal dysfunction. A significant percentage of SE-survivors typically develop chronic epilepsy, and mood and cognitive dysfunction over time. Antiepileptic drugs used for the treatment of SE fail to modify the long-term detrimental effects of SE. Thus, efficient alternative therapies are needed for preventing SE-induced morbidity. Based on findings in our preliminary studies, EOCL has great promise for easing SE-induced hippocampal dysfunction.
What is the aim of the project?
Our main aim is to test the neuroprotective effects of IOCL and search for a alternative treatment against epilepsy.
What techniques and methods are used?
Techniques and methods that will be used: Stereotaxic surgery, Microinjection of pilocarpine, Behavioral analysis , Perfuse, Fluoro-Jade (FJ) staining procedure, counting cells and Statistical analysis.
What is the role of the student?
