What is the background of the project?
The project will prepare dendritic cells from mice bone marrow and from human derived monocytes. These cells will be the vaccines loaded with different peptides from the human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. They will be used for mice inoculation to check protection against this bacterial pathogen and with human cells to prepare assays of vaccine efficiency in vitro using donor as well as patients blood samples. Other vaccines to be tested will be nanoparticles coupled to peptides and they will be prepared also in vitro as well as their toxicity controls with human and mice cells.
What is the aim of the project?
To prepare vaccines based in Listeria antigens to protect against listeriosis and to use them as tools for cancer processes.

Cell cultures, blood samples processing, flow cytometry, bacteria infection, animal handling
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Handling of different cells from mice bone marrow and human blood, handling of a bacterium and infection in cells, flow cytometer analysis for cytokine measurements, proliferation and cell surface markers and mice obtaining of bone marrow and spleen cells.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Preliminary reading, seminars at Cruces Hospital, IDIVAL or HUMV Hospital.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Minimal laboratory skills required: how to calculate concentrations, use of pipettes and prepare solutions and buffers.
