Screening of compounds with antiviral activity using a chiral compound library
Department of Molecular virology, Graduate School of Medicine
Hiroshi Shirasawa, MD, PhD, Professor
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Chiba University has been developing a library of unique compounds with chirality. The department of Molecular virology has been screening compounds with antiviral activities of the compounds using the library. The virus used for the screening is an RNA virus, Respiratory Syncytial virus (RS virus).
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is screening, identification and characterization of compounds with antiviral activity using the chiral compounds library of Chiba University.
What techniques and methods are used?
Techniques needed for the screening include culturing cells used for virus infection, titration of virus, Polymerase Chain Reaction for quantification of the virus, and western blotting for characterization of the antiviral activities.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
culturing cells used for virus infection, titration of virus, Polymerase Chain Reaction for quantification of the virus, and western blotting for characterization of the antiviral activities.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Students should know basic knowledge of medical science, and preferably virology.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
