What is the background of the project?
Cleft lip and cleft palate are facial and oral malformations that occur very early in pregnancy, while the baby is developing inside the mother. Clefting results when there is not enough tissue in the mouth or lip area, and the tissue that is available does not join together properly. Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital anomalies. The aim of this research project is to answer a very important question, what is the relation between Gender & cleft palate incidence. In the mid-South of Egypt, where lots of ruler countries take place in Egypt, there is a great opportunity to examine cases of cleft palate reaching the puberty without repairing their clefts and also the young ones.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of the project is to know the relation between the incidence of cleft lip &palate Gender/retrospective study in Sohag governorate.
What techniques and methods are used?
It is expected to examine about 350 case and operate about 150 cases during the mission period. The relevant data will be collected in the first 2 weeks and observations will be noted after taking control measures into account to determine the correlation between the factors.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results

What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The exchange student is expected to participate in different steps of the research including spending time in the plastic surgery clinic for data collection.After the exchange period the student should have gathered information about the incidence and prevalence of the orofacial clefts and the relationship between the gender and other effecting factors with the incidence of the orofacial clefts, the basics of the medical research and methodology, and some statistics regarding the incidence of the cleft lip palate in Sohag, Egypt. -The student will write down all the above mentioned steps in his/her logbook to be signed by the tutors at the end of each shift. -At the end of the clerkship the student will make a conclusion according to the statistical studies they had already made through the whole month to evaluate the whole project and prepare a scientific report.
