[Full] Development of novel combination treatments for breast cancer cells
Turkey (TurkMSIC) - Dumlupinar University, Kutahya
Physiology Department, Dumlupinar University, Faculty of Medicine
Prof. Dr. Osman Genc
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azmi Yerlikaya
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
The aim of the current project is to develop novel combination treatments involving 26S proteasome inhibitors and other chemotherapeutic drugs. The 26S proteasome is a multi-subunit and multi-catalytic intracellular protease. Studies with proteasome inhibitors showed that proteasome is responsible for the degradation of more than 80% of the intracellular proteins. The target proteins are usually ubiquitinated prior to degradation into peptide fragments by the proteasome. Aberrations in the components of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway are commonly observed in many cancers, and uncontrolled growth of cancer cells can result either from stabilization of oncoproteins or increased degradation of tumor suppressor proteins. In addition, a recently conducted study showed that the amount of 20S proteasome in plasma of many cancer patients (acute myeloid leukemia and Hodging
