Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project without Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Patients values and preferences are increasingly considered important in health care decision making, in formulating recommendations by clinical practice guidelines developers and in policy making.
The aim of the project is to develop a free access database of studies in the field of values and preferences of patients. This database will collect, classify, summarize and assess the quality of published studies about values and preferences of patients.
Techniques:
1- Prioritize areas. We plan to start localizing and assessing studies regarding values and preferences of patients with lung cancer. After that, we plan to follow with other cancers.
2- Search strategy development and validation in the different databases (Medline,Embase, ISIS web of knowledge, EBSCO CINAHL and PsycINFO).
3- Literature search.
4- Article selection.
5- Articles evaluation of the full text, assessing methodological quality using appropriate instruments.
6- Synthesis of the results
7- Categorization of the articles included (e.g. by health care topic, methodology, etc.)
8- Develop a web site for the database.

What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be involved in the first phase of the project. He/she will participate in the selection of the studies regarding values and preferences of patients with lung cancer, in their classification, assessing their methodological quality and in developing the study summaries. He/she will participate in all the meetings related to the project.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Weekly the student will receive one to one seminars about basic principles of how to develop a systematic review and will be provided with the relevant bibliography. He/she will be integrated with the research team and will be aware of the project development. He/se will be welcome to assist to all team meetings and will be briefed about other projects if interested. The student will be tutored by several researchers of the Iberoamerican Cochrane Center who will look after his/her training.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
- The student will prepare a scientific report
- The student will have the opportunity to present the results together with the supervisor at a conference
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Intermediate English level and basic skills in working with microsoft office word and excel
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
No
