Tissue markers in salivary gland neoplasms
Greece (HelMSIC) - National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens
1st Dept. of Pathology, Medical School National and Kapodistrian University of Athens
Prof. Efstratios Patsouris
Andreas C. Lazaris, Associate Professor
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Salivary gland neoplasms present an impressive diversity. Most of the salivary gland neoplasms arise in the parotid glands. Neoplasms that arise in the salivary glands are relatively rare, yet they represent a wide variety of benign and malignant histologic subtypes. Although researchers have learned much from the study of this diverse group of tumors over the years, the diagnosis and treatment of salivary gland neoplasms remain complex and challenging problems.
The acquisition of experience in the use of immunohistochemical methods and research protocols in the estimation of tissue markers of biological behaviour in salivary gland neoplasms performing routine pathology.
The aim of the project is to estimate tissue markers of biological behaviour in salivary gland neoplasms. Salivary gland neolplasms present considerable heterogeneity and often a biphasic nature which is worth investigating with markers of diagnostic and biological significance.
Techniques that will be used include immunohistochemistry and image analysis of immunohistochemical results
