The effect of sphingosine-1-phosphate and its analog FTY720 on airway smooth muscle contractility
Department of Medecine, Universite Laval
English or French
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a lipid mediator that is overexpressed in asthmatic lungs following exposure to an allergen. The effect of S1P on the contractility of airway smooth muscle (ASM) is not well characterized. Also, the effect of one of its analog named FTY720, which is currently FDA approved in the treatment of certain human conditions, on ASM contractility is unknown.
What is the aim of the project?
What techniques and methods are used?
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
No special skills are required. The student will have to complete courses on safety laboratory procedures and animal handling prior to begin the experiments.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
