English and Spanish
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Description: In our laboratory we are interested in the mechanisms related with the vascular function and dysfunction in human placenta, espetially in deleterious coonditions, like the oxidative stress, insulin resistance and diabetes in pregnancy.
What is the aim of the project?
To determine the mRNA levels of human cationic amino acids transporters in human placenta.
What techniques and methods are used?
Techniques: ? In vitro isolation of human endothelial cells ? RNA purification from cells and tissues ? Polymerase chain reaction ? Electrophoresis ? Data analysis
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks of the student will be performed on his/her own
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Isolation of RNA from placental tissues Isolation of endothelial cells for prymary cell cultures Perform RT-PCR experiments Analysis of molecular biology experiments Presentation and discussion of results with the lab team Be part of research team, collaborating with rutine duties of the lab
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Yes, when students arrive I give them one article from our lab to read and discuss about the aim of our research and the main methodologies that we are applying
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
We require that student have a basic training in cellular and molecular biology. A final report of experiment will be solicited.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Pre-Medical students from the American-British system - Students in biomedical fields
