What is the background of the project?
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the most frequent seen orthopaedic disease. To properly treat this disease the adequate diagnosis should be performed. The most important thing is to diagnose the DDH at the early stage during the newborn age. In 1978 prof. Reinhard Graf in Austria, developed a new diagnostic method based on ultrasound. He classified the newborn hip according to the hip development to 4 types. The early diagnosis can be performed at the age of 2-4 weeks and gives us an excellent view to the newborn hip. This is non-invasive, relatively cheap and safe method. In our Clinic we start to diagnose newborns I n 1982. This early diagnosis of DDH significantly reduced late diagnosis cases, enable early and proper treatment and significantly reduced the number of cases which should be treated surgically.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this project is to evaluate hip development during the newborns ultrasound hip screening according to Graf's examination technique.
What techniques and methods are used?
ultrasound hip screening according to Graf's examination technique
