What is the background of the project?
Its about a financed project executed in vivo (rats) and in vitro that analyzes the action of Natural Products, like vegetal extracts, up in living infectious organisms.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim is to evaluate the biological action of these natural products against infectious agents related to osteoarthritis. With the results, it is intended to validate natural products, identify extracts, fractions or bioactive compounds in a way that will be possible to provide subsidy to use them as herbal medicines for osteoarthritis treatment in humans.
What techniques and methods are used?
The plant extracts are tested in experimental models of osteoarthritis in laboratory animals. The biological tests are, at the same time, accompanied by the chemical study, aiming to characterize the active fractions. The subdivision is made by chromatographic methods and the isolated substances are analysed by spectroscopy. The student will be able to attend to lectures, basic lessons and seminars with the laboratory team, and he/she is expected to participate on the laboratory routine, working with procedures that include using the laminar flow cabinet, microscope, and other laboratory stuff. He/she is expected to participate into the experiments performed in the laboratory. We hope that the experience in the laboratory will stimulate the interest of the student by the research. Depending on the research internship duration and on the development of the student, he can get an abstract to publish. He will be also, of course, encouraged to write to the IFMSA Medias.

Its required a basic knowledge on immunology. The student has to sign a confidentiality term. The student MUST have interest on basic research and good sociability.
