[Sinaloa] Etiology of acute diarrhea in children
Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa

Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Diarrhea is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in socio-economically developing countries. More than one billion episodes of diarrhoea occur every year among children under five years of age causing approximately 2.5 million deaths. Acute diarrhea in tropical countries can be caused by a broad spectrum of viral, parasitic, and bacterial enteropathogens.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this work is to identify (and correlation with symptoms) the etiologic agent causing of diarrhea in children with acute diarrhea admitted in a public pediatric hospital, with emphasis on diarrheagenic Escherichia coli: prevalence and virulence factors (toxins, plasmids). There are six recognized categories of diarrhoeagenic E. coli each have unique features of virulence attributes frequently encoded on genetic elements (plasmids, chromosome).
What techniques and methods are used?
Techniques used in this study will be enzyme-linked immunoabsorbant assays KITS, in order to detect viruses (rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus), protozoa (Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica) and Bateria (Campilobacter etc), Including the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify the six recognized categories of diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli and identify the virulence factors (toxins, plasmids, flagelous).
What is the role of the student?
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Have coursed at least the first two years of the carreer
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
