What is the background of the project?
Lactoferrin, a natural multifunctional or multi-tasking defense protein belonging to the innate immune system, present in several body fluids and secretions, as well as in the secondary granules of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Its protective effects range from direct anti-microbial activities against a large panel of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, up to anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. In our lab we are interested in to determine how the protein exerts its antitumoral and antimicrobicidal activities, in cultured cells and animals trials. Specifically, we are directing our research in to test if synthetic lactoferrin derived peptides have similar properties.

The aim of the project is to study the mechanism involved in the microbicidal and antitumoral activities of lactoferrin and synthetic lactoferrin derived peptides in vitro and in vivo
