Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Fish farmers in order to carry out their activity need to comply national regulations regarding the quality of the effluents from the fish farms that enter the natural environment. The chemistry Department is involved in the chemical monitorization of these effluents;
What is the aim of the project?
Chemical monitorization of physico.chemical parameters of water wuality from fish farms; Nitrogen and phosphorus compounds are quantified as well as suspended solids and oxygen demand;
What techniques and methods are used?
Water filtration; Gravimetria determinations; volumetria and spectrophotometric measurements and quality control of results;
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
All the pratical work will be done bu the student under supervision. After demonstration the student should be able to perform basic chemical procedures, use the spectrophotometer and analyse the results using statistical tests;
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Basic knowledge on analytical chemistry;
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts:
- Medical students
- Graduated students (less than 6 months)
- Pre-Medical students from the American-British system
- Standard methods for the examination of water and waste water. 22nd edition. American public health association; American water works association; water environment federation
