What is the background of the project?
Newborn screening is an early test for inherited metabolic disorders in the neonatal period; those diseases can cause serious problems or even death for the baby if not treated soon after birth. Those babies look normal at birth but need treatment right away if proved to be affected by metabolic disease. These include disorders of amino acid metabolism such as phenyketonuria (PKU) and maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), disorders of fatty acid metabolism (e.g. medium and very- long- chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase Deficiency ; MCAD and VLCAD) as well as organic acidemias like isovaleric academia and methylmalonic acidemia.
What is the aim of the project?
To test for inherited metabolic disorders in the neonatal period.
