Screening for Germline Mutations among Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Jordan (IFMSA-Jo), Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid
Princess Haya Biotechnology Center, King Abdullah University Hopital
Laith N. Al-Eitan, PhD
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Cystic fibrosis is a recessive genetic disease affecting most critically the lungs, and also the pancreas, liver, and intestine . It is caused by mutation in CFTR gene.
What is the aim of the project?
1- To determine the mutation spectrum which cause the disease in Jordanian population. 2- Learn the molecular technique (PCR, DNA extraction, electrophoresis, PCR sequencing, etc.) 3- How to analyze the electrogram. 4- How to use the bioinformatics tools (NCBI, enesmbl, chromose, primer
What techniques and methods are used?
We use DNA sequencer method to detect the mutation in the gene by DNA extraction from blood , then PCR using thermalcyclear ,then gel electrophorises, purification and sequanse PCR then cleaning and loaded in 3031xl genetic analyzer. There will be some lectures on the subject and hands-on lab training.
What is the role of the student?
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Tasks will be given on a day-to-day basis.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
- Knowledge of Genetics principles. - Complete all training hours successfully. Any other requirement listed in the EC for jordan
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months)
