Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
Characterization of Recent Thymic Emigrants (PTK7+) and Th17 cells in Multiple Sclerosis and its Possible Role in the Pathogenesis
The demonstration of a failure of central tolerance in the pathogenesis of the Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome (APECED) supports a role for its failure in the development of autoimmune diseases. The presence of increased numbers of recent thymic emigrants (RTEs), and/or transitional B cells from bone marrow in peripheral blood of patients with autoimmunity, would support this hypothesis.
Peripheral blood ohealthy blood donors (Blood Bank (BST) of Catalonia, Spain) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients will be analysed by multicolour flow cytometry with a combination of different monoclonal antibodies to characterize different maturation stages of T cells, Th17 cells and B cells
Used Techniques Immunofluorescence and flow cytometry
What is the aim of the project?
Find new therapeutic alternatives for MS.
What techniques and methods are used?
PCR, Cell culture.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Participation in the project, theorical knowledge and a report 10 pages of the work done.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a poster
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Skills : motivation, good attitude; if possible basic knowledge of the lab.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students - Graduated students (less than 6 months) - Students in biomedical fields
