Prevention of the Cisplatinum ototoxicity
McGill Auditory Sciences Laboratory, Montreal Children
Dr. Sam Daniel
Dr. Sam Daniel ; Dan Citra
English required, French accepted
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Cisplatinum is an anti-neoplastic drug commonly used against many tumours. Although certain substances prevent some of cisplatinum-induced toxicities without influencing its anti-tumour effect, ototoxicity is currently the most frequent dose limiting side effect of this powerful chemotherapeutic.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this research is to design a model of an ototopically used substance that prevents the occurrence of cisplastinum-induced hearing loss
What techniques and methods are used?
What is the role of the student?
- The student will mainly observe
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The student will be expected to make a thorough literature review. She/he will be taught many surgical skills as well as hearing testing skills. The student will work with the animals and will be expected to perform the tests with the help of an experienced researcher. The student will be collecting and analyzing the results. The student will be able to understand the mechanisms of a research project, will be able to perform various techniques, will be capable to have a judicious evaluation of a project, will develop ingenuity in future problem solving, will acquire organizational skills and will pursue his/her interest in discovery.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
The Student will attend seminars, lectures and courses and he/she will have to prepare preliminary readings
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- No specific outcome is expected
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Preferably basic medical/biological knowledge . Serious, hard working, an inquiring mind.
There are no legal limitations.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
