Study of congenital cytomegalovirus infection
Fukushima Medical University
Department of Microbiology, Fukushima Medical University School of Medicine
Tatsuo Suzutani, MD, PhD, Professor
Kei Ishibashi, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Ken Ishioka, PhD, Assistant Professor
Type of Research Project
- Basic science
What is the background of the project?
Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is a common infectious disease in human beings (about 1 case in 300 deliveries). Over 80% of these cases are asymptomatic infections, but other cases suffer from various abnormalities including hearing-loss.
What is the aim of the project?
We study i) the mechanisms how congenital cytomegalovirus infection causes hearing-loss using guinea pig cytomegalovirus model ii) the frequency of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in the healing-loss patients by PCR.
What techniques and methods are used?
Please ask us
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
Students are expected to carry out a part of the project under the supervision of the lab staffs. You will acquire Cell culture, Virus isolation, PCR and basic gene technology.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
Basic knowledge of infectious diseases and microbiology from textbooks for virology and infectious diseases
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
