Molecular Diagnosis of Viral Hepatitis (Mansoura University)
Egypt (IFMSA-Egypt) - Mansoura University, Mansoura
Microbiology & Immunology department, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt
Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abo-Elella.
Dr. Mohamed A. El-Farash.
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
In Egypt there is high incidence of infection with Hepatitis Virus (A, B, C viruses are most common types). So in the Microbiological Diagnostic & Infection Control Unit (MDICU) inside the Microbiology and immunology department in Mansoura Faculty of Medicine they study the viral hepatitis and its diagnosis, aiming to reach the most accurate method of diagnosis.
What is the aim of the project?
We aim to reach the most accurate method of diagnosis for viral hepatitis to treat it effectively and take further steps in Hepatitis elimination.
What techniques and methods are used?
Collecting data from patient in the patient in the microbiological diagnostic and infection control unit and will do data entry using statistical application. Also, there’s laboratory work for diagnosis of viral markers as ELISA and PCR.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
- If the project is clinical
- the student will be allowed to work with patients
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The students will collect data about the prevalence of Viral Hepatitis and how it’s diagnosed. This data will be arranged, studied and revised well by both the student and the doctors. They will be working on data entry according to the needs of the research and after that they will do analysis of this data, in order to provide an effective result which can be used in the research. The students will then work on the interpretation of the data into research paper. The student will also do clinical observation at the department but under supervision by the doctor and may do some clinical work after doctor’s permission. The student is expected to help the supervising doctor in all tasks delegated to him regarding the research.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Introduction seminar about the work process, what we already did and what we will do.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report - The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
clinical or preclinical student with basic knowledge of microbiology, biochemistry & molecular biology.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
