Surveillance of nosocomial infection in MUHs (Mansoura University Hospitals).
Egypt (IFMSA-Egypt) - Mansoura University, Mansoura
Microbiology & Immunology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University, Mansoura, Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt
Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abo-Elella.
Dr. Mona B. ElHadidy
Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
The project will be held in the Microbiological diagnostic & infection control unit (MDICU) inside the Microbiology and Immunology department in Mansoura Faculty of Medicine. Students will be able to study the surveillance of patients, personnel and environment aiming to identify sources of Nosocomial Infection (NI) inside MUHs (Mansoura University Hospitals) through culture sampling, identification and follow up.
What is the aim of the project?
Limitation of nosocomial infection in Mansoura University Hospitals by identification of risk factors and application of high standard measures to prevent nosocomial infection.
What techniques and methods are used?
Taking samples from health personnel, patients and environment for laboratory studies. Then analysis of the data to arrange the high risk factors to be highlighted for the infection control unit at the hospitals to start elimination of risk factors.
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
- The tasks will be done under supervision
- If the project includes “lab work”
- the student will take active part in the practical aspect of the project
- If the project is clinical
- the student will be allowed to work with patients
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
The students will collect data about the risk factors for nosocomial infection. This data will be arranged, studied and revised well by both the student and the doctors. They will be working on data entry according to the needs of the research and after that they will do analysis of this data, in order to provide an effective result which can be used in the research. The students will then work on the interpretation of the data into research paper. The student will also do clinical observation at the department but under supervision by the doctor and may do some clinical work after doctor’s permission. The student is expected to help the supervising doctor in all tasks delegated to him regarding the research.
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
Introduction seminar about the work process, what we already did and what we will do.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a scientific report - The student will prepare a poster - The student will prepare a presentation
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
clinical or preclinical student with basic knowledge of microbiology.
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
