What is the background of the project?
The development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria has become one of the most serious clinical problems. As a result, there are urgent needs to search for new means to combat this problem. Antimicrobial peptides are one of the means to replace conventional antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. However, the applications of the antimicrobial peptides inside human body are still problematic. One of the concerns is that the bactericidal peptides normally lack obvious specificity, therefore, in many cases are also harmful to mammalian cells.
What is the aim of the project?
The aim of this project is to apply bioinformatic approach to predict the antimicrobial activity and specificity of already known antimicrobial peptides against bacteria after alter the amino acids in their sequences. The newly designed peptides with high bactericidal activity and low cytotoxicity will then be synthezed chemically and functionally tested for further application.
What techniques and methods are used?
Bioinformatic calculations of peptide functions, bacterial culture, mammalian cell culture, cytotoxicity tests, biochemistry experimental techniques.
What is the role of the student?
