What is the background of the project?
The KetelD dominant female sterile mutations of Drosophila identify the importin-β coding gene. Importin-β has been known to be a cytoplasmic protein, component of the nuclear protein import machinery. Yet, the KetelD mutations bring about excess chromatin condensation, as revealed through the enhancement of position-effect-variegation (PEV). Furthermore the KetelD-induced enhancement of PEV is epigenetically transmitted to the subsequent generations, like the prion-associated characters. Apparently the Y chromosome plays key function of the KetelD-connected epigenetic inheritance.
