Type of Research Project
- Clinical Project with Laboratory work
What is the background of the project?
We have identified several unique antigens that are expressed in human cancer-stem cells (CSCs), but not in normal tissues except for testis. In order to target the CSC- specific antigens for cancer immunotherapy, we need to know the protein expression in primary cancer tissues. We have established the CSC antigen-specific monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. In this research project, we would examine expression of the CSC-specific antigens in human cancer tissues by immunostaining method and evaluate the efficacy of the antigens for CSC-targeting immunotherapy.
What is the aim of the project?
_Examination for expression of cancer-stem cell-specific antigens in primary cancer tissues such as colon cancer, breast cancer, gynecological cancer, urothelial cancer, and sarcoma by immunostaining method.
What techniques and methods are used?
What is the role of the student?
- The student will observe the practical experiments but will be highly involved in the analysis of the results
What are the tasks expected to be accomplished by the student?
1. Immunostaining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedding tumor tissues 2. Evaluation of the immunostained tissues for expression of specific antigens 3. Discussion for cancer-stem cell-targeting immunotherapy, especially cancer vaccine
Will there be any theoretical teaching provided (preliminary readings, lectures, courses, seminars etc)
We will have lectures by our staff.
What is expected from the student at the end of the research exchange? What will be the general outcome of the student?
- The student will prepare a presentation - The student will prepare a scientific report
What skills are required of the student? Is there any special knowledge or a certain level of studies needed?
__No skill is required. Only basic immunology such as antigen and antibody, basic histology, and human anatomy
Are there any legal limitations in the student’s involvement
Type of students accepted
This project accepts: - Medical students
- __Robbins; Basic Pathology
