Working Conditions
Languages Remarks
Languages: Strictly English speaking. Documentation of English proficiency required, such as IELTS International English Language Testing System or TOEFL-Test of English as a Foreign Language. If the student's English is not deemed sufficient, the LEC has the right to cancel the clerkship immediately. Native speakers of English from UK, USA, Canada or countries where major exams are in English will not require additional proof of language ability. All other countries, please check with LEC when applying.
Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.
Required level of studies
Final year students only.
Graduated students allowed

Even if accepted by the hosting country, students must be still enrolled in university by the time the Application Form is sent.

4 weeks, 7 hours a day, 5 days per week

Academic Quality
Australia has implemented Academic Quality for all national exchanges, students are expected to bring and fill out the logbook of their own NMO. If students do not have their own logbook, a copy of our AMSA logbook will be provided by the Local Committee at minimal cost. We expect students to complete the logbook and meet the attendance requirements in order to gain their end of exchange certificate.
Special Remarks
Usually five days a week, 5-8 hours a day. This will vary depending on the city and department. Some units may require the student to be on call for one weekend of the clerkship. Hospital regulations must be followed and students must complete at least 80% of the requested hours. 

Dress code:
Smart and professional with closed-toed shoes. No white coat.

- Women: No short skirts or plunging neckline 
Bring stethoscope and notebook for your own note-taking.

Both Melbourne and Perth are home to excellent, world renowned teaching facilities and cities!
Calendar Remarks
Dec/Jan/Feb applications are given preference. Limited spaces available in other months. 

Only applications to end of November- end of January are available. Please note the holiday period in Australia late December to first week in January when hospital departments will not take students due to staff on leave. For this reason, the elective period may not overlap exactly the calendar month.

Most disciplines are available except Obstetrics and Gynaecology. For Paediatrics please apply 18 months in advance (may require additional fees).

Most available except General medicine and General Surgery are not options. For Neurosurgery and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, a formal email request addressed to the Head of Department is required.

Visa requirements
Visa requirements are solely the responsibility of the student. AMSA bear no liability should the student be denied a visa or refused entry into the country. Australia has STRICT visa requirements. Students should contact/visit their local Australian Embassy explain their placement and enquire what visa is deemed necessary. Students have previously encountered difficulties that could have been avoided by contacting the embassy.

Check to see if your country is part of the visa waiver program. Issue of visa will take at least 8-12 weeks. Do not leave it too late!

Refer to for more information or contact your local Australian Embassy. Most students who visit Australia with IFMSA exchange have a tourist visa. Please confirm with your local ambassy for specifics.

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
Perth: Students must present themselves approximately a week earlier for MRSA testing. (See details under 'Special Remarks')

  • Health insurance: It covers expenses linked to health issues (if you have to see a doctor and buy drugs on prescription)
  • Liability insurance: It covers expenses related to damages you can cause to objects or people outside from your professional duties.
  • Travel Insurance: This insurance will cover you if problems appear during your travel such as medical emergency, trip interruption or cancellation, lost or stolen baggage or travel documents, and default protection.
  • Malpractice insurance: It covers you if you harm patients during your professional duties at the hospital and you get sued.

Students need to have: Health, Travel, Liability, and Malpractice insurances to come to Australia. They must get the three first ones from their home country. For the Malpractice insurance, they can either get it from their home country prior to coming or can see below for some suggested Australian organisations to buy it.

Special remarks

- Students may be required to submit additional documents/completed forms specific to the hospital. (LEC will contact students. You must reply or clerkship will be cancelled). 


- Students must present themselves approximately a week earlier for MRSA testing.

- Testing involves having nose, hand, and wrist swabs taken to check for the presence of MRSA, followed by appropriate treatment if required.

- Students will not be allowed to see patients until status is clear.

- Cost will be AUD40 to the student for testing.

Application documents & deadline:

Application deadline: 12 MONTHS before requested date. 

Scan all documents in colour and submit at least 12 MONTHS in advance or clerkship will be cancelled. NEO will NOT accept paper documents at MM of that season.

All documents must be sent digitally.

All documents must be stamped and on letter headed paper.

All documents must be in or translated into English.

Under RECCOMMENDATION LETTER please include a Letter of Support from your Dean

Under OTHER please include Two Academic References.

Under VACCINATION CARD please provide proof of immunisations including Hepatitis B, some LC's may require Hepatitis C and HIV.

Please bring all original documents when you arrive. Failure to provide original documents upon arrival, incomplete applications or no medical indemnity are grounds for termination of the clerkship and you will be sent home immediately.

Insurance: Health Insurance and Medical Indemnity are MANDATORY.

2. Medical indemnity (malpractice) insurance: please apply in your home country.

Proof will be required with AF. Any problems please contact the NEO/LEC.

Incoming students will be held accountable for any damage incurred during clerkship. Complaints of misconduct in any form will result in the cancellation of the clerkship.
