In Estonia, most patients speak Estonian as their first language. About 30% of the population speaks Russian as their first language. Younger patients tend to know English quite well, but this is usually not the case for the older generation.
Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.
Required level of studies

Estonia EstMSA accepts incoming students for clinical clerkship only, preclinical students will not be accepted. It is compulsory that the student has finished at least two of the subjects that they choose as their preferred departments.

Academic Quality

To get the certificate each student has to fill out their SCOPE Handbook and the EstMSA Summer Exchange Attendance sheet. Hospital attendance required: 100%. The student may take 20% off,  but only on condition they reach a prior agreement with their supervising doctor. Students are required to attend at least 80% of the exchange to get the certificate.

Most departments only accept one student per month.

The department of traumatology is unavailable during August due to an annual collective leave during that month.

When filling the AF, four different departments must be chosen by the student according to their interests. In case none of the four preferred departments are available, we will consult with the incoming student to find a solution.

Social Program

Social program consists of various events including parties (National Food and Drink party, Goodbye party) and different trips in Estonia and to neighbouring countries (Finland, Latvia etc). Social program will cost extra for the students.

Visa requirements

Should you require a visa, please apply for a tourist visa. Student visas are not accepted.

Nationals of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and any third-country national holding a residence permit of a Schengen State do not need a visa to enter Estonia.

The citizens of the non-Schengen member countries are requested to possess a Schengen Visa in order to enter the Schengen Zone. However, there are exceptions to this rule: there are some countries that are not part of the Schengen Agreement that do not require a visa to enter the Schengen zone. The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements

Students are required to upload THIS (LINK) vaccination document as proof of immunization signed by a doctor to the Card of Documents under Immunisation Record. Other documents will not be accepted.

As a proof of negative tuberculosis test, the following options are acceptable: negative Igra-tb test, negative Mantoux test, negative quantiferon test, chest X-ray negative for findings that allude to tuberculosis confirmed by a radiologist.

Upon arrival documents: nasal swab MRSA test results done no longer than 2 weeks before your exchange starts. Results must be sent to the LEO before arrival in Estonia.

COVID-19 special

All incoming students are obliged by the decision of the University of Tartu and the University Hospital to be immunized against SARS-COV-2 with a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency and possess proof of immunization in English. 
The proof of vaccination needs to be sent to the LEO at least 2 months before the start date of the exchange as well as brought as a printed version to present to the hospital.
All incoming students (even the vaccinated ones) must present a negative PCR test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival to Estonia. 
The test result must be sent via email to a Contact Person, the LEO or the NEO before arrival to the Local Committee.
EstMSA Estonia does not provide vaccination or testing to the students.
Failure to comply with these regulations results in the automatic cancellation of the exchange. 

Insurance

EstMSA requires health insurance (EU health insurance card is accepted) and travel insurance, however these cannot be obtained in Estonia and must be obtained in the student’s home country. Malpractice insurance is not required.

COVID-19 special

Because of COVID-19, not all the departments stated in LC's explore pages will be available.
In case the student tests positive for COVID-19 during the exchange, the exchange in the hospital will be cancelled and EstMSA will not pay for alternative accommodation.

Substitutions have to accept whatever department we can offer. We try to accommodate the wishes of the student, but in the case of a substitution, we reserve the right to place the student in any department available.
