Proof of English language proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB is required, unless you are from an English speaking country. TOEFL (minimum overall 93, 22 in reading and writing) or IELTS (minimum 7.0).
You should also be familiar with English medical terminology. We reserve the right to cancel the exchange at any moment for students we believe are unable to communicate effectively in English.
Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.

Academic Quality
You will be part of a rigorous academic clinical posting with local medical students. You must thus be prepared for the academic requirements of the department and uphold professionalism and good conduct during your attachment.
During the elective posting(s), you will be given the opportunity to undertake the following responsibilities together with local medical students:
  • History taking and interview techniques
  • Physical examination
  • Clinical problem solving
  • Effective communication with patients & relatives
  • Management and treatment approaches
  • Research

Special Remarks
The working conditions vary depending on the hospital and department that the applicant is attached to. Typically, a day would be 6 to 10 hours, with sufficient time for meals and rest. If you are interested in night and weekend shifts, please consult your supervisor, and the department will try to accommodate (not guaranteed).
The student’s participation in the care of patients is a hands-off observership only. However, the supervising tutor may extend participation to hands-on tasks if you can show that you are capable of performing them.

In addition, the local committee will also be more able to engage you in social programmes during this period.

Special Remarks
If you have any particular requirements regarding accommodation, please inform the local committee when applying. The standard accommodation that we provide is a bed and locker in a mixed gender dormitory that comes with breakfast and basic facilities. Due to the high cost of living in Singapore, you may have to pay more if you would like to change your accommodation (only possible if you are on a unilateral exchange).

Please pay S$53.50 via bank transfer to AMSA-Singapore (further details will be provided via email upon application form submission). All remaining payment will be made upon arrival, unless you change department or dates compared to your original application. In that case, you will have to pay the full fee again; this is because the money will be transferred to the university as administrative payment for the substitution (as per university policy - more information here).

VERY IMPORTANT!
As student on exchange in NUS, you will have to apply for a spot through the official university website and ship the documents to the university by post according to the instructions on their website (more information in the Card of Documents section). Once you apply for a spot in NUS, you will enter a round of competition with other students applying for an elective in NUS, therefore your department preferences may not be guaranteed.

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR), Varicella (Chickenpox), Influenza, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Pertussis (for Paediatrics postings only).

Insurance
Malpractice, health and travel insurance are required for the period of your attachment. These have to be submitted after you have received the Card of Acceptance, and at least 2 months prior to your attachment period. In addition to submitting the CoD, applicants will have to apply for their clinical exchange, as well as select their preferred departments and hospitals via the NUS portal at: https://inetapps.nus.edu.sg/scep/pre_reg.aspx. NUS and AMSA Singapore will process your application, and the CA will be sent upon successful acceptance for the exchange.

Part 1 of the required documents found here (https://inetapps.nus.edu.sg/scep/apply.aspx) must be submitted by post at least 9 months prior to the intended date of the exchange. Do note that part 2 of the documents do not apply to students applying under SCOPE. To increase your chances of getting your desired department, you are advised to submit the documents earlier, up to 12 months before the intended date of exchange.
