Clerkship Type
- Clinical Clerkship
A clinical clerkship is defined as the rotation of a student in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, such as Dermatology and Pediatrics.

Even if accepted by the hosting country, students must be still enrolled in university by the time the Application Form is sent.

Academic Quality
  • Guatemala has prepared physicians in every discipline.
  • We encourage the students to take his time to study the patients, since they are allowed first hand practice.
  • Incoming Students MUST bring their own Student Handbooks and hand them to their hosting professors on the 1st day of their clerkship. More than 80 percent of the attendance and filled Student Handbooks are compulsory to receive Certificate.

Special Remarks
  • Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) about 6-8 hours per day, it depends on the hospital and discipline. The schedule varies depending on the selected discipline.
  • Night shifts are not mandatory, but the are avaivable if desired. 
  • Dress code: Blue Scrubs and white pants. Ask before your exchange. Please bring along your white coat and sthethoscope, and we highly recommend bringing your sphygmomanometer. If you are under a rotation of surgery bring green scrubs and pants.  
  • The student will be under the supervision of a tutor. You will receive classes along with the other students of the Discipline and examine patients under the instruction of the tutor. You will also be able to practice some procedures if you know the proper technique and the tutor allows you to.
  • Students must follow local regulations in order to recieve the certificate by the end of the clerckship.

Cities Remarks
Guatemala City is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala, and the most populous in Central America. The city is located in the south-central part of the country, nestled in a mountain valley called Valle de la Ermita. You will be placed in one of the following hospitals:

Hospital General San Juan de Dios
Hospital General de Enfermedades IGSS
Hospital General de Accidentes 7-19 IGSS.

All exchanges last 4 weeks, usually from monday of the first one until friday of the last one.
  • We have exchanges in 3 different periods

  • We will schedule great social program activities.  Also, we can’t accept exchanges on the month the easter week takes place, this is due to the fact that students would miss about 7-8 days of the internship.

Social Program
Organized by the social program coordinator. A variety of activities including cultural, gastronomic, adventure, sports and nightlife will be available for you to enjoy. Nevertheless, we will also provide tools for you to elect the most enjoyable experiences in our country in other available months where no social program is offered. We will do our best to offer a incredibly beautiful experience to remember!

Visa requirements
  • We normally give the Invitation Letter but if you need another document please write to the NEO In (neoin.ifmsa.gt@gmail.com)
  • If you need the ORIGINAL INVITATION LETTER the deadline for the request is 2 months in advance at the IFMSA General Assembly (March or August), subsequently will not be sent the original Invitation Letter for any one student or NMO
  • Incoming students should apply for TOURIST VISA. This is very important, otherwise they will not be able to get their visa.

The standard documents are the basic documents that the students are asking for and the special documents are less important, as only some Local Committees ask for them. So it's mandatory to upload the standard documents, but not the special ones. (Students do it when asked for by the LEO/NEO.)
The upon arrival documents are hard copies documents that the students are requested to take with them in the host country.”
Immunization requirements
The student has been vaccinated against Hepatitis B (at least 1 dose is required) and Influenza

Insurance
  • As NMO we require complete international health and travel insurance (MANDATORY), however, this cannot be arranged in our country and should be arranged in your country. This to assure we can give the exchange student freedom to get to know the country, but we won't be assuming the risks.
  • We don't ask for malpractice insurance because in Guatemala students can't have this document as being student. Only doctors can hace insurance. If the students still want this insurance, they have to arrange them in their own country. This can not be arranged in our country.

  • The Curriculum Vitae is requiered in spanish with a photo of the student.
  • Health insurance must be valid in Guatemala during the period requiered by the student.
  • Spanish Language certificate must warrant a high spanish language proficiency.
  • Vaccination Card must warrant vaccination against Hepatitis B, Influenza besides the basic vaccination protocol.
  • Motivation letter is requiered to be in spanish and signed by the student. It is handed to the tutor previous acceptance in the discipline.
