Hope to see you in Sweden soon!

OVERVIEW
For detailed information, please see the rest of our explore pages and our exchange conditions. Feel free to contact our NEOs or NOREs and we will gladly answer your questions as soon as we can! You can find more information below.

HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

The Swedish health care system is largely tax-funded and ensures that everyone in need has equal access to healthcare services. All children under the age of 20 receive medical and dental care free of charge in the whole country.

According to the latest EU-report, life expectancy in Sweden is among the highest in Europe. Sweden has the lowest proportion of smokers compared with other countries in EU and the mortality rate due to Stroke and Cardiovascular diseases has decreased.

On the first day of your clerkship you will have to bring indoor shoes, a stethoscope and a name tag. No white coat is needed.

Please ask your contact person where you can find hospital clothes during your clerkship. Normally you could find them in the storage room in the basement (The textilförråd).

MEDICAL EDUCATION
Medical education in Sweden is 5½ years long and can be studied in seven different cities, from Lund in the south to Umeå in the very north. We also have LCs in Uppsala, Stockholm, Linköping, Göteborg/Gothenburg and Örebro.
Clinical rotations generally start around the 3rd year and we can practice as junior doctors after the 9th semester.

After 11 semesters, students graduate and do an 18-24 month long internship at different departments before taking the licensing exam and obtaining a license. After that, we offically get to call ourselves medical doctors.

Sweden can also offer superb research opportunities in both basic science and clinical research. Professors at Karolinska Institutet are for example the ones who decide who will ge the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine every year.

We are positive that you will make great developments both as an individual and as a future doctor and/or scientist together with us!

TRANSPORTATION
Sweden has a developed transportation network of trains, buses, subways, trams, cars, boats and airplanes. You can easily move within the city or even travel to other parts of Sweden for a small amount of money. It is easy to take the plane, train or boat to the rest of the nordic contries such as Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland. Sweden is also close to the Baltic countries and you could easily go there by boat or plane.

During your stay you will most likely be using buses, trams or subways if you are not willing to walk and enjoy the scenery. You can buy a bus card for your whole stay (1 month) for a price range between 550-930 kr depending on the city. The same card can be used for the trams and subways. Your contact person shall provide you with more relevant information upon your arrival.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
Sweden has an exceptional social program and we try to show you the best of Sweden when you are here. Each city offers a unique social program every year.

All our cities will arrange a joint social program between SCOPE and SCORE exchanges. The social program is unique to each city and will differ dependeing on the capacity of the LC.

A national social program where we go on a cruise to Finland for a weekend.

Contact your local officer for more information.
