About Soochow University
Soochow University is located in the ancient town of Suzhou, also called "Paradise on Earth". The university is part of the national "211 Project" and is a "2011 Plan" university. It is also one of the Jiangsu provincial key comprehensive universities. It has grown from the former Soochow University founded in 1900. It now has three major campuses: main campus, Dushu Lake Campus, and the Yangcheng Lake Campus, covering an area of 2,705,000 square meters with a total building area more than 182 million square meters. The university facilitates strong research with materials in almost every area including nearly 4 million books, over 30 million Chinese and foreign periodicals, and more than 1.1 million Chinese and foreign e-books, and 82 Chinese and foreign language databases. Soochow University currently has 26 post-doctoral programs, 24 main discipline doctoral programs, including 167 doctoral programs with different areas of emphasis, one professional doctoral program, 47 main discipline master’s programs, including 244 master’s degrees with different areas of emphasis, 21 professional master’s programs, and 124 undergraduate programs. Today, Soochow University has developed into a comprehensive university with 12 major disciplines: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management science, and art. About Medical College
Medical College of Suchow University is one of the earliest domestic founded medical colleges; it is also one of the first doctorate awarded medical colleges. In April 2000, Suzhou Medical College was merged into Soochow University and become the Medical College of Soochow University. It is combined with five major academies: School of Biology and Basic Medical Sciences, School for Radiological and Interdisciplinary sciences, School of Public Health, College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Nursing and three clinical schools of medicine.
About Affiliated Hospitals
- The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University
The hospital has its origin in Suzhou Boxi Hospital, which was founded by the American Methodist Episcopal Church in 1883. It has now become a large general hospital which integrates medical treatment, scientific research, teaching, prevention and health care. The hospital features a complete variety of departments, strong technical forces, advanced equipment, pleasant environment, high level of academic research and good work ethics. In December 1994, it became one of the first “Grade III, Level A” hospitals approved by the Ministry of Public Health in Jiangsu Province.
- The Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University
The Second Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University, which is also known as the General Hospital of Nuclear Industry, the Sino-France Friendship Hospital, and the No.6 People’s Hospital, was established in December 30th 1988, and invested by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC, former Ministry of Nuclear Industry). It was designed as a modern largescale general hospital which belongs to the Ministry of Nuclear Industry. The hospital was built for the education development of the Suzhou Medical College, which belongs to the CNNC. In 2000, it changed its name into the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University. Hospital has 30 level 1 & 2 discipline clinical departments. With the development of the past 23 years, the hospital has become a “Grade III, Level A”general hospital including medical, teaching, scientific research and prevention.
- The Children Hospital of Soochow University
The Children's Hospital of Suzhou University was established by Dean Chen Wumin based on the department of pediatrics of the first Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou Medical College in 1959. The hospital has now become a ‘Grade III, Level A’ children's hospital which integrates medical treatment, scientific research, and teaching. It features a complete variety of departments, strong technical forces, advanced equipment and pleasant environment.
The Institute of Neuroscience at Soochow University, originally the Institute of Neuroscience at Suzhou Medical College, was founded in 2010. The major research divisions of the Institute are the neurobiology division, the neuroanatomy division and the neuropharmacology division, as well as the neurology and neurosurgery divisions from the affiliated hospitals. As a research center, the Institute provides efficient and high quality platforms and facilities for translational researches, international collaborations and graduate studies for medical neurobiology students.

The Institutes of Biology and Medical Sciences (IBMS) was founded in January 2010 as an independent research unit of Soochow University, derived from the former Department of Immunology and Microbiology. The current space of IBMS laboratories is approximately 5000 m2, with SPF grade animal facilities, BSL-2L laboratory, molecular biology, cell culture, proteomics and imaging platforms. Its equipments and resources are among the best of domestic and international immunology laboratories. IBMS is booming after three year of development, with steady increase in its research and education level to achieve the international standards. IBMS is on its way to become a leading interdisciplinary research institute in China with profound international influences.

Contact your contact person to let him/her know you've safely arrived at the airport. All inbound students will be picked up the airport by our staff and taken to Soochow University.
Our staff will assist you to handle these procedures. You need to confirm your contact details and will get your meal card, key for dormitory and articles for daily use after that.
We've arranged accommodation for you . Student dormitory are on campus or in the hospital. Also there will be a volunteer who can help you communicate with door lady who cannot speak English. Be sure you've got his or her contact details. Feel free to contact us if you have any problem.
After things settle down, there will be a welcome orientation for you. Then we will show you around the college and the hospital. In the following one month, you will learn from doctors of different sections in the hospital. You can also share ideas and experience with medical students from different places. More details will given to you after your arrival.

Suzhou is not a mega-city, but with the development of economy, there are several kinds of public transports which can carry you wherever you want. In one word, the transportation in Suzhou is quite convenient. Therefore, it's of great significance to choose the right one before going out. Here are some recommendations.
About Price: The base price of the common taxis is CNY 10. After the initial 3 km, it will charge passenger CNY 1.8 per km. And each waiting time of 5 min equals 1 km. From 23:00 to 5:00, the extra night subsidy will be charged.
TIPS: 1. Call 67776777 to arrange a taxi for you if necessary. 2. If telling the destination is much difficult, just try to have your destination written in Chinese on a piece of paper, which will efficiently simplify your journey.
Visiting the appealing places in Suzhou by bicycle is another good option, since most of the famed attractions are located in the city area. There are many bicycle rental services in the city.
About Price: The price is about CNY 5 per day, while a rental card is needed.
Tips: 1. If you are interested in biking, you can contact with your receptionist for help. 2. The differences in traffic rules require your more attention during the riding. Suzhou 18
About Price: The cost of each bus can be seen when you get on it. Usually it takes CNY 2.
Tips: 1. There are several bus stations around Soochow University,including Xiangmen, Donghuan Road etc. 2. Remember to prepare some coins in advance.
Pedicabs are available on most of the main streets. It is one of the features of Suzhou which you should not miss.
About Price: Usually, the chartered pedicab charges CNY 5 per person per hour.
Tips: Please negotiate the price before you get in to avoid the unnecessary troublesome.
There is a rail station in north of the main campus. It's convenient to you because the railway is quick and you have no need to prepare coins.
About Price: The cost depends on the distance but is really cheap.
Tips: If you have any problems, feel free to consult the costumer care or a volunteer.
Suzhou gardens are the most outstanding representatives of Chinese classical gardens. These gardens, mostly built by scholars, are miniatures of natural scenery, including rocks, hills and rivers with strategically located pavilions and pagodast. The Garden of the Master of Nets, the Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden are the most famed among the 69 classical gardens in Suzhou.
It is well known for its natural beauty as well as historical sites. The hill is so named because it is said to look like a crouching tiger. Another legend states that a white tiger appeared on the hill to guard it following the burial of King Helü in the late Spring and Autumn period (475-221 BC). The hill has been a tourist destination for hundreds of years, as is evident from the poetry and calligraphy carved into rocks on the hill. Visitors to this site will be mesmerized by the Sword Pond and Yunyan Pagoda.
It is one of the most famous water townships in China, noted for its profound cultural background, the well preserved ancient residential houses and the elegant watery views. Streams flow through the town in a criss-cross fashion, earning the town the epithet of ‘The Venice of China’.
Jinji Lake was named so because legend has that a golden rooster (Jinji) once fell into a boat on the lake. With the international lakeside design and romantic landscape, Jinji Lake Scenic Area attracts a multitude of leisure visitors. People can take the special touring bus around the lake to enjoy the complete picture of the lake.
