OVERVIEW
Chillán is a city located about 400 km (249 mi) south of the country's capital, Santiago de Chile, near the geographical center of the country. It is the capital of Ñuble region and, with a population of approximately 175,000 people (253,000 the Chillán Conurbation for 2012), the most populated urban center of this province. Within the city are a railway station, an inter-city bus terminal, an agricultural extension of the University of Concepción, and a regimental military base. The city includes a modern-style enclosed shopping mall in addition to the multi-block open-air street market where fruits, vegetables, crafts and clothing are sold. The nearby mountains are a popular skiing destination..

HOW TO GET HERE

by bus
There are three bus terminals in Chillan: The Maria Teresa Terminals is the biggest and most important bus terminal in the city, connecting it with the rest of the regional capital cities of Chile, including Santiago. The Constitucion Terminal only has buses from and to different cities from the Valparaiso Region to the Los Lagos Region from only one bus company: "Linea Azul". La Merced Terminal has buses that connect Chillan to other small towns nearby.

Chillan is the last station for the "TerrasurChillan" service in Chile. This service has daily trains that connect Chilan to Santiago, including 9 stops in different cities.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION

The most important mean of transportation in Chillan are the thirteen lines of minibuses called "micros". This busses connect the whole city and also some other small nearby locations like Cocharcas and Las Mariposas.
"Colectivos" are a especial kind of taxi with a predetermined route, like a bus, but in a car. There are around thirty lines of colectivos that connect the whole city. There are also regular taxis in the city.

MUST SEE
-Chillan Viejo, a city right next to Chillan, has a museum of Bernardo O´Higgins, one of the great heroes of Chilean history. And not too far from here you can see the Museum of Arturo Prat the great navy hero who gave his life for his country during the Pacific war. He now has his face on the largest bill in Chile, the $10.000 peso bill.
