Kirov, former Vyatka, is a city in north-eastern European Russia, and an administrative center of Volga Federal District. It is one of the prominent industrial, cultural and educational centers of Russia with well functioning telecommunicational and bank spheres. The population of Kirov is nearly half a million.

The climate in Kirov region is moderately continental, the winter is long and cold, and summer is short, but rather warm. The mean temperature in January is from minus 14 o C to minus 16 o C, and in July from plus 17 o C to plus 19 o C. Kirov is a part of Moscow time zone.

The city was founded in 1374 on the banks of the river Vyatka. Throughout its history the city had several names: first it was called Chlynov, then Vyatka and in 1934 the city was named after S.M. Kirov, a famous statesman of the past.

Kirov has a vast educational net, an important part of which is formed by institutes of higher education. The biggest higher educational establishments are Vyatka State University, Vyatka State University of Humanities, Vyatka State Agricultural Academy and Kirov State Medical Academy. Besides, there are nearly 91 secondary schools, technical schools, colleges, schools of sports, music and art.

The city is considered to be an industrial centre as there is a great number of modern industrial enterprises in it such as: Tyre plant, Nonferrous metal processing plant, Artificial leather plant, Biochemical plant, ski-factory and so on. Various measuring instruments, tyres, hunting, skiing, timber and Dymkovo toys are well-known in our country and abroad.


Kirov state medical univetsity (KSMU) is the youngest higher medical establishment in the Russian Federation that was created to consolidate all Kirov region's programs in medical education. Founded in 1987 by an act of Russian Ministry of Health Protection as an medical school affiliation of Perm State Medical Academy, KSMA was granted the status of an independent state-supported higher medical school in 1993, in recognition of its growth and development as a regional health system.

In addition to the clinical departments, located in the best hospitals of the city of Kirov , KSMA has:

•  its own clinic;

•  outpatient policlinic;

•  Kirov Interregional Center of Hepatosurgery ;

•  Kirov Interregional Center of Cardiac Surgery;

•  Kirov Interregional Epilepsy Treatment Center ;

•  Kirov Interregional Ophthalmology and Ophthalmosurgery Center ;

•  Kirov Interregional Center of Medical Sociology;

•  An interregional diabetes center for patient education is being organized and is sure to contribute to the improvement of health care in the region and neighboring areas.

•  Research library with more than 200,000 units of storage.


KSMA has already gained experience in international cooperation in joint research programs with such foreign countries as Germany, Great Britain and the USA. Another important sphere that is being developed is academic mobility. By now more than 400 students and researchers of KSMA have visited Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, China, Canada, the USA and some other countries on various academic purposes.

Academy has been an active participant of international conferences. By itself KSMA has organized more than 100 international conferences and workshops on actual problems of family medicine, urology, andrology, gynecology, minimally invasive surgery, hematology, therapy, neurology, cardiac surgery, hepatology, hepatic surgery, ophthalmology, ophthalmic surgery and dentistry. New methods of surgery are constantly being mastered. Basic laboratories take active part in international clinic tests.

KSMA has good scientific relationships with Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Kirov Research Institute of Microbiology, Perm Medical Academy, Nizhny Novgorod Medical Academy, medical academies and medical research institutions of Moscow and St. Petersburg .

For nearly 25 years Academy has been training foreign students from various Asian, South American and African countries such as Azerbaijan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Peru, Syria, Sudan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Congo, Georgia and others.


The students get their meals in a hospital canteen from Monday to Friday, 1 time per day.

Students will all live together in the same dormitory.
Kirov is linked by railways to the rest of Russia, having a railway station on a historic branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway. 

Public transportation in Kirov includes trams and trolleybuses, as well as bus and marshrutka (routed cabs) lines.

The Kirov Airport has international flights as well as domestic ones to many Russian cities and towns.


We organize for our incoming students a sightseeing tour around the city, Welcome dinner and Farewell party, National food and drinking party, visit together theatres and cinemas, museums and churches, organize trips to other cities nearby . Depending on the season we offer such sport activities like skiing, skating, cycling, roll skating, etc.

Kirov is a historical city of Russia since 1970. In the city there are 11 historical monuments, 22 monuments of architecture, 3 monuments of art and 1 monument of archeology of federal (all-Russian) significance. Another 54 cultural monuments have the status of regional, 19 objects are specially protected natural areas of regional importance.
One of the oldest cultural monuments of Kirov is the ensemble of the Assumption Monastery of Trifonov, located on the embankment of the Vyatka River.
One of the best works of park architecture of provincial classicism is the Alexander Garden. It was laid on the occasion of a visit to Vyatka in 1825 by Emperor Alexander I.
