UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS
Hawassa University was established as a body of BahirDar University on 22 December 1999 as a result of the Council of Ministers Regulation No. 62/1999, which ordered the consolidation of the BahirDar College of Agriculture, BahirDar College of Teachers Education and Health , and Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources. Dilla College of Teachers Education and Health was afterwards separated from BahirDar and now stands as a university on its own by opening new faculties and schools, Dilla University. The health faculty, however, has been incorporated into Hawassa University. In 2003 and onwards, as part of Ethiopia's ambitions plan to make higher education accessible to its citizens, the university has upgraded its capabilities enormously, by adding new departments, programs and research facilities. Hawassa University is one of 33 comprehensive universities in Ethiopia, engaged in the provision of all-round education, research and training. In 2012 alone, the University graduated 4187 students. In the ceremony, the University president Dr. Yoseph Mamo noted the number of academic programs, which had been 8 at the beginning of its establishment, had now increased to 64 first degree programs, 43 second degree programs, and 4 PhD programs. The university has more than 38,000 alumni. According to the University official website, "the University aspires to be one of the best higher learning institutions in Africa in graduate and undergraduate education, and a center of excellence in teaching, research, and public services with the highest possible quality."
