OVERVIEW
Mackay Medical College (Abbreviation: MMC) was founded on the basis of Jesus Christ’s universal love and was aimed to embody the spirit of Dr. Mackay’s motto: “Burn out rather than rust out.” With the support of MMH, including solid clinical work, plenty of researches and an abundance of teaching faculty, Mackay Medical College was finally established on March 30, 2009. Mackay Medical College is located on a nineteen-hectare campus, in Sanzhi District, New Taipei City. It is part of the North East Coast, a famous scenic area attracting many tourists. MMC is surrounded with amazing sceneries, you can see National Yang-Ming Mountain behind the campus, and Taiwan Strait right in front of the school buildings! School buildings encompass an unique “Oxford College” and “British consulate” architectural style. MMC is also known for its five-star dormitory. MMC now comprises three departments (Medicine, Nursing and Audiology and Speech Languages Pathology) and one graduate institute (Biomedical Sciences).
UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS

Mackay Memorial hospital is known for its devoted, innovative, and exceptional provision of medical services. The hospital at present consists of five medical institutions in Taipei, Danshui, Taitung, and Hsinchu with 7300 employees as well as affiliated academic institutions, Mackay Medicine, Nursing, and Management College and Mackay Medical College, that are devoted to the education of health care professionals and medical missionaries.

History

Mackay Memorial Hospital, under the jurisdiction of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, was established in memory of Dr. George Leslie Mackay who followed in the footsteps of his Master by coming to Taiwan with the message of salvation for all men. In 1880, Dr. Mackay founded the Mackay Clinic in Tamshui, which was the first western hospital in the northern part of Taiwan. Besides treating patients, Dr. Mackay often preached and took teams of Taiwanese Christians with him on his medical and evangelistic tours in northern Taiwan. With the Bible in one hand and dental forceps in the other, he defied mountains, rivers, and jungle overgrowth to do medical evangelism. Although practicing medicine and evangelizing Taiwan was very difficult work at that time, Dr. Mackay endured for over 30 years. During this time, he not only pulled over 20,000 teeth, but also proclaimed the Gospel to many different people around the island. He established more than 60 churches and baptized more than 4,000 believers.

Health care services

Pioneers at Mackay Memorial Hospital handed on the tradition of serving those who were often ignored by others, such as caring for patients with leprosy. Mackay Memorial Hospital established public health services, including the first Polio Rehabilitation Center in Taiwan, Counseling Center, Suicide Prevention Program, the first intensive care wards, a Cleft lip & Palate and Maxillofacial Surgery Division, and a Burn Ward. The Mackay Counseling Center is staffed by professional counselors with a goal of provide emotional and psychological counseling as a complement to medical care. The center was established in 1965, providing suicide prevention and life line telephone counseling. The counseling service is available to employees, patients, their family members, and the general public. Overseas missionary ministry To commemorate the 125th anniversary of Dr. Mackay’s first mission voyage to Taiwan, the hospital board began overseas missionary work in 1997. Following in the spirit of Dr. Mackay’s work, the work is intended to be cross-cultural service in remote, needy areas. The Akah tribe of north Thailand was chosen as our first mission field by the Overseas Mission Board.

Vision for the future

A new acute care building in Tamshui was established in 2007 and named “Mackay Tower”. Located along the river in a garden-like setting, it is designed to provide state-of-the-art emergency facilities for the benefit of patients and to enhance the training of medical students.
