Wonkwang University was founded in 1946 under the name of Yuil Haklim and has since served as a pioneering private school in the advancement of Korea’s modern education system. For the past 66 years, we have remained firmly committed to developing talented people with upright character and specialized knowledge. WKU is the ancient home of the Mahan and Paekche kingdoms (B.C. 1C – A.D. 660) in the Western part of South Korea.
WKU was founded as the cultural and intellectual center of Jeonbuk Province and currently has fifteen colleges, consisting of twenty-six departments and thirty-six divisions, as well as nine graduate schools including the law school. As of March 2013, The University has an enrollment of 17,000.
The University has the high-quality facilities necessary for advanced studies, comprehensive research, and creative cultural activities. The Main Library and University Museum include a variety of collections of rare books and folkloric materials. Fifteen colleges and sixty-six research institutes contribute to Wonkwang’s diverse academic environment and scholarly accomplishments. The Wonkwang Medical Center, located on campus, offers both Asian and Western Medical practices. In addition, Munhwa Stadium provides the community with sports facilities as well as a venue for diverse cultural and popular entertainment experiences.

Wonkwang University Hospital(WKUH)
Since its opening in 1980, with Won Buddihism’s spirit of ‘With medicine, heal the world’ as its mission statement, Wonkwang University Hospital has been taking responsibilities for the health of local community members and contributing to the medical development of local community as the leading medical institution with the integrative eastern- western medical care system in Jeolla Province.
WKUH have set a plan with 4 major strategies as Patient- oriented, Creating future, Social Service, and Efficiency-oriented to become the clear, bright, and comforting hospital that leads the healthy society of 21st century, and to become the patient-oriented and trusted hospital, all members of Wonkwang University Hospital are working hard every day to meet their own responsibilities.
Currently, it has 38 departments that include internal medicine (16 subjects), surgery (14 subjects), and consultation support (8 areas), along with 12 specialized medical centers that are customized to various diseases of the patients and cutting-edge medical care system that include Da Vincci robotic surgery equipment and cutting-edge CT equipment, and provide patient-oriented customized medical services.
Furthermore, Wonkwang University Hospital proved its excellence with its achievements, such as receiving the certificate of ‘Accredited Medical Institution’ from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and being selected as Jeonbuk Regional Cadiocerebrovascular Center, Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Center, Jeonbuk Regional Trauma Center, Jeonbuk Regional Emergency Medical Center, and Emergency Medical Doctor Helicopter. Meals are provided in hospital cafeteria.
Hospital cafeteria is located under the lobby of hospital. There is a page to sign with your name on. You can have meals after signing on the paper.
Student dormitory(Iksan Global Exchange Center)
It is located inside the campus and in front of the dormitory, there are ATMs and convenience store.
You will share a room with another SCORE/SCOPE exchange students if necessary. (double occupancy)
There is a place for laundry in front of the dormitory and you can use washing machine and dryer.
LAN cable is provided so you can use Internet service for free.
Most of the train to Iksan departs at Gwangmyeong, so you have to take a shuttle bus from Incheon airport to Gwangmyeong. It takes about 2 hours including riding shuttle bus and it costs 30,100won.
There is a few train from Incheon airport T1 and T2 to Iksan directly(3 times a day for each), and it costs 44,600won and 45,200won each. It takes 2 hours and 20minutes. For more information and reservation, please visit http://www.letskorail.com/ebizbf/EbizbfForeign_pr16100.do?gubun=1.
You can take a bus directly from the Incheon international airport to Iksan. It takes 3 hours and 10 minutes and costs 31,500 won. The bus departs from Terminal 1 Bust stop location(1floor No.12) and Terminal 2 Bus stop location(Transportation center Basement 1 No.9). For more information and reservation, please visit https://www.airport.kr/ap/en/tpt/busRouteList.do. If you search Iksan, there are 3 options to choose. You should not choose 'Jeonju/Iksan IC'. It doesn't come to Iksan bus terminal.

We usually take bus and taxi to go around Iksan. We will let you know what is the best transportation every time you go somewhere:)

In Iksan, there are two world heritage spots designated by UNESCO.
Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri
The Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri located in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, was built as a detached palace by the royal court of Baekje in an attempt to make up for the weakness of the capital city in Sabi (Buyeo).
Mireuksa Temple Site
The Mireuksa Temple Site, located in Mireuksan Mountain (430m above sea level), Geumma myeon, Iksan, has been the largest temple site discovered in East Asia.
# Iksan Prison Set
Iksan Prison set is the only prison set for movies and dramas in Korea. Many movies and dramas are filmed here. You can see and experience what "real" prison looks like in Korea. You can put on prisoner's uniform for free and take a picture with realistic background:)
Gunsan was important spot for trade so it is influenced by various countries and cultures. There are a lot of exotic spots and places that have historical meaning. There are also one of the oldest bakery named "LEE SUNG DANG". You should taste signature bread(read bean bread, vegetable bread) there:) Eunpa lake park has very nice night view to chill around.
Jeonju is very famous for Hanok(Korean traditional house) village. There are 735 traditional Korean hanok houses. While the rest of city has been industrialized, Hanok Village retains its historical charms and traditions. A part of Hanok has been set aside so that tourists can experience traditional Korean life, called Hanok Life Experience Hall.
The food provided is very traditional, which adds to the traditional ambience. At Jeonju Hanok Village, visitors can enjoy traditional Korean life and traditional foods like bibimbap, the most well known dish from the Jeonju region.
