Kayseri has a big population and is both a cultural and industrial center with an incredible historical background. There is also a historical covered bazaar, the third largest in Turkey, which is still present in the city center. Kayseri is still famous for its hand-woven silk and wool carpets. Kanish and Karum ruins, the Assyrian and Hittites centers lie 22 km to the east of Kayseri.
The mountain, after which the university is named, Mount Erciyes, is 3,916 m high and quite spectacular all year round. Mt Erciyes is the most outstanding feature in this region, not only with its fascinating scenery but also with the opportunities it offers for winter sports. Gevher Nesibe hatun medical center was built 800 years ago by Seljuks. The institution was reportedly the First Hospital in The World that treated patients with mental disorders. The complex as a whole represents the earliest surviving Seljuk medrese and hospital in Anatolia. In these complex mad people was threatening by music instead of putting them to the torture.. The university hospital in Kayseri's Erciyes University was also named in memory of Gevher Nesibe. In 1978 Gevher Nesibe Hospital started to serve the public with a capacity of 930 beds.The Semiha-Asim Kibar Organ Transplant and Dialysis Hospital has a total of 140 beds, 30 of these beds are used for dialysis. This unit is able to provide nephrology, dialysis, and organ transplant services.
Mehmet Kemal Dedeman Oncology Hospital is equipped with 120 beds, a hematology clinic, a medical oncology clinic, a radiation oncology clinic along with a bone marrow transplant unit. Our Yilmaz and Mehmet Oztaskin Heart Hospital has a 160 bed capacity along with a Department of Cardiology and Heart Surgery.Also Mustafa Eraslan and Fevzi Mercan Children’s Hospital and Gulser-Dr.Mustafa Gundogdu Central Lab-block are in medical center.Hakan Cetinsaya Experimental and Clinical Research Center (DEKAM) is a very important research center in our country. This center has participated in research studies abroad and as a result of its successfulness it was connected to the Faculty of Medicine in 1999. The Minister of Health has given permission for this center to participate in clinical drug research. Our research center is the first and only center in our country that participates in this kind of research.

Kayseri is a major transport nexus for the region. You can reach Kayseri by either plane or bus. The city is served by Erkilet International Airport and the International Air Transport Association symbol for the airport is ASR. The airport is approximately 5 kilometers (3 miles) away from the city center.There are several flights per day to Istanbul airport which is Turkey's premium air transportation hub. Kayseri’s Erkilet Airport has a brand new modern terminal.During the summer months there are some direct flight from European countries to our airport .Kayseri has a busy bus station with very frequent and convenient coach service to and from Ankara and Istanbul as well as other cities in Turkey. The journey from Ankara takes about 5 hours (316km) and from Istanbul 11 hours (770km).The public transportation system in Kayseri is quite modern. In Kayseri there are buses, minibuses taxis and a light rail transit system called Kayseray is under construction and is expected to open in a year.
