The first medical school of The Republic of Turkey (1945)

Number of physicians was very inadequate in the first years of The Republic of Turkey which was making great strides on the path of modernization. After beeing reorganized, Istanbul School of Medicine started to graduate 150 – 250 physicians every year by the contribution of wellknown German professors.

When The Republic of Turkey was established in 1923, the number of physicians all over the country was only 554, while this number reached 1625 in 1935. In time, when number of students who wanted to study Medicine increased, it became inevitable to establish a new medical school. At his opening speech of the parliament in 1937, Atatürk, founder ofTurkishRepublicpointed out the necessity of building two new universities and medical schools, one inAnkaraand the other in Van. For the first step a new law was legislated in 1937, but the Second World War postponed the attempts until the end of the war.

Major general Abdulkadir Noyan was appointed as Dean of Ankara School of Medicine by President Ismet Inonu and education started with the first lecture onOctober 19, 1945at Cebeci Hospital.

The name of Ankara School of Medicine has changed to Ankara University School of Medicine following the establishment of Ankara University in 1946. With it’s dynamic nature, Ankara University School of Medicine has developed fast and became the leader in terms of medical education and health service inTurkeyin a very short period. Furthermore Ankara University School of Medicine has made great worldwide contribution to science by medical research programmes.

Accepted Training Models

Currently Ankara University School of Medicine serves in three campuses. Morphology Building was completed in 1967 and takes place at Sihhiye Campus while Ibni Sina Hospital started to serve patient care on March 13th 1985.

Morphology Campus

Morphology building was established in 1967. Dean’s office, offices of Vice Deans and Faculty Secretary, the central library, 13 Departments, 4 Disciplines and some administrative offices are located in this building.

The Central Library(http://kutuphane.ankara.edu.tr/) containing over 50,000 written and printed materials, covers 684 square meters with a reading room with 125 person capacity. It is very spacious with wide and comfortable reading areas. Wireless network connection is also provided. The collection of the Central Library consists of books, theses and periodicals.

Besides a two-storied conference room with 800 person capacity, there are 4 other meeting rooms and two big reading halls for students use equipped with up-to-date computers.

Each department located in the building has modern research laboratories open for the use of other departments of the medical school. At the backyard of the building there is a sports complex with basketball, tennis and volleyball facilities where various sports activities are performed.

A two floor canteen which can serve up to 800 persons is also available in the campus. The upstairs of the building is designed for rest and leisure activities while downstairs is designed for dining. There is also a restaurant with a panoramik view of Ankara on the top of the building.

Ibni Sina Campus

We have been making great effort to serve well-qualified health care since 1985, when Ibni Sina Hospital was established. We can proudly say that it is one of the most modern and advanced hospitals in Turkey serving with a capacity of 900 beds.

Besides all internal and surgical medical departments, various medical care units and clinical and molecular laboratoriessupported with up-to-date modern medical technology are present in the hospital. Approximately 100 to 110 surgery operations per day are held in 26 operation rooms present at the hospital. Kidney and liver transplantation practices from cadavers as well as live donors are successfully performed. More than 12,000 hemodialysis sessions are performed per year. Chronic peritoneal dialysis is also performed at the CAPD unit. Number of medical analyses performed at Ibni Sina Hospital Central Laboratories by up-to-date equipment and under international quality control policies is increasing. The emergency service, one of the biggest emergency services in Turkey was reorganized and opened in 2007 furnishes service to approximately 30.000 out and inpatients per year.

Hasan Ali Yucel Conference Hall with 180 seat capacity serves for various scientific meetings.

Cebeci Campus

One of the most prominent feature of Cebeci Hospital is its horizontal location between wide green areas, serving with 1200 bed capacity in 35 buildings.

A modernist rehabilitation center serves for the rehabilitation of neurologic and orthopedic disabilities. Bone marrow transplantations are carried out at the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit which has been accepted as the 117th center by the European Bone Marrow Transplantation Union and became a reference center. All modern treatment methods used in the field of Radiotherapy are performed. The are numerous operating rooms, intensive care units and sterilization units equipped with modern technology.

The first Department of Nuclear Medicine of turkey was established here in 1963 and made great contribution to the recognition of Nuclear Medicine Science.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Building opened in 1967 have all modern diagnostic and treatment departments, operating rooms and delivery rooms, laser unit and the electronic centralized fetal monitoring unit, “Perinatology”, “Test Tube Baby,” “Menopause” units. Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment Research and Application Center have been serving in this building.

Department of Pediatrics Building opened in 1963, is an environment where valuable physicians has grown with all types of opportunity. The building has a Neonatal Unit was established in accordance with modern medicine. Also the Child Emergency Service offers service for 24 hours.

Institute for Leprosy opened in 1961 serves to patients with leprosy and dermatological problems.Central Laboratory opened in December 1995 serves for 24 hours.Department of Chest Diseases and Allergy Department Building is located in one side of 50th Anniversary Lecture Room which has established in 1972 with 296 seat, on the other side of it Department of Psychiatry and the Children’s Mental Health Department Building serves.

Department of Chest Diseases is one of the leading clinics with Intensive Care Unit, Bronchology, pulmonary function tests, a catheter laboratory, a Smoking Cessation Clinic, COPD follow-up Clinic.

Department of Ophthalmology which serves as the most modern Eye Clinic of our country, has a clinic established in 1964 and a polyclinic established in1973. In the Ophthalmology Building serves with Retina, Strabismus, Contact Lens, Tumor and Uvea Units. Vehbi Koc Eye Hospital opened in 2007, also is an important health investment.Modern Heart Center Building which is include Departments of Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology and established in 1996, is a center used advanced technologies in intensive care, angio, and other units. In the Department of Public Health Building opened in 1980, practical applications are made about rural medicine and family medicine.

We'll provide you lunch every weekday in the hospital restaurant.
The students are accommodated at the student dorms where all the other students 
live. However during summer months the dorms are almost empty. The rooms are 
double, you don't need to bring bed sheets. Towels are not provided. There is a 
common bathroom (separated for men and women). There's wi-fi in the rooms.
Ankara University, School of Medicine has two hospital region: Ibn-i Sina Hospital and Cebeci Hospital.
Ibn-i Sina Hospital is in Sihhiye, one of the center and oldest places of Ankara. You can arrive with Subway, Bus or Minibus easily. It takes 20-25 minutes from dorms with bus. Subway(M1)&Bus Stations are 5 minutes away by walking, Minibuses are passing in front of hospital. It's very close to Kizilay, center region of Ankara where every bus stops and subway routes crosses.

The other region Cebeci Hospital is in Dikimevi, also one of old places of Ankara. It isn't that much central region like Sihhiye but there are Bus&Subway(A1) Stations and minibuses. By walking, you can go Kizilay in 30 minutes or with Subway it takes 5-6 minutes.

To use Bus or Subway, you need AnkaraKart. It's a card that you can buy it easily from many places and you can load money on it from all Subway Stations and some MiniMarkets near bus stations.

The Anatolian Civilizations Museum, being among exceptional museums with its unique collection, has Anatolian archaeological artefacts and artefacts from the Palaeolithic Age to the present.

-Etnography Museum
The Ethnography museum reflects the turkish national character, history and culture. It is the first state museum which was planned and built in the republic period.

-Kugulu Park
In summer, there are some concerts, festivals and open air movie nights in the park. During the day it's a must-do to feed the birds and take pictures with the ducks and swans.

-Ankara Castle

Ankara Castle is a popular tourist destination. The castle, originally from the Celtic period, rises in the Ulus district. The castle were renovated several times by the Romans as well as the Byzantines, the Seljuks and the Ottomans, and offers a magnificent view over the city. Typical old Turkish houses, numerous art galleries and restaurants surround the castle walls.

The outdoor museum is formed of the ruins of an ancient public bath remains from the Roman Empire.

-Cer Modern

Located in an old train depot, this huge artists park and gallery exhibits modern and challenging art from across Europe, plus there's an excellent cafe and shop. Cultural events are also staged here.

-Ankara State Opera House

This venue plays host to all the large productions staged by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet. The season generally runs from September to July.
