Perm State Medical Academy is one of the biggest high educational school of Perm. There are 5 faculties, 69 departments, more than 20 clinical bases, modern scientific laboratory. About 3500 students, including foreign young people, study at PSMA. Famous surgical scientific school founded by academic E.A. Vagner is well known not only in Russia. The Heart Center is working in collaboration with famous surgeons from USA, Israel and Germany. The development of new department of Obstetrics and Gynecology made it attractive for student and young scientist. The museums of Anatomy department and department of operative surgery have rich collection of old preparations and specimen of modern medicine.
Perm State Academy of Medicine has buildings for training, Central Research Laboratory and complex of hostels. Foreign students live in comfortable hostel located in the center of city.
1. "Use of intravenous immunoglobulin for the opsonization of Candida albicans,E.Coli and St.Aureus in blood of patients with infection endocarditis". Department of immunology.
Description of the project: the number of fungal and bacterial infections has grown recently and this requires an increased interest in the study of antifungal immunity mechanisms. The innate immunity recognition systems that are involved in phagocytosis of microscopic fungi, such as patern-recognition receptors, including the family of C-type lectin family and Toll-like receptors (Brown, 2011) are described. However, there is little information about the participation of opsonizing mechanisms in the recognition of fungi and bacteria.
The aim of the project: to study the effect of immunoglobulin (Ig) for intravenous reference ("Octagam") on parameters of phagocytic activity of peripheral blood leukocytes from donors against Candida albicans, E.Coli and St.Aureus.
Techniques and methods: As an object of phagocytosis we will use slurry of Candida albicans, E.Coli and St.Aureus. We’ll spend opsonization using a commercial preparation “Octagam” containing Ig G class with a wide range of specific Ig against a complex of microorganisms. The working concentration of the drug IgG is 20 mg/ml (Deryabin, 2007). We’ll conduct accounting results microscopically by counting the parameters of phagocytic activity of neutrophils and monocytes separately. Statistical methods.
Role of the student: 1)The capture of venous blood of patients with infectious endocarditis. 2)Work in the laboratory: independently carry out opsonization of bacteria and fungi, to work with the microscope. 3)The discussion of the results. The hypotheses. 4)Working with documents.
2. "Features of the lesion of otorhinolaryngological (ENT) organs from HIV-infected patients at different stages of the disease". Department of infectious diseases, Department of otorhinolaryngology.
Description of the project: HIV infection is one of the most actual problem in the modern world. Progressive immunodeficiency in HIV-infected patients leads to the development of opportunistic infections of different organs and sistems, including ENT organs.
The aim of the project: to study the features of the lesion of ENT organs from HIV-infected patients at different stages of the disease.
Techniques and methods: Otorhinolaryngological examination, virological and bacteriological methods, statistical methods.
Role of the student: 1)Work in infectious hospitals: the joint examination with the doctor HIV-positive patients. 2)The capture of smears in HIV-positive patients from the nasal cavity, the tonsils, external ear canal. 3)Work in the laboratory: examination of smears on the fungi of the genus Candida (C. albicans etc). 4)The discussion of the results. The hypotheses. 5) Working with documents.
3. "The influence of blood supply on the course of inflammatory diseases of lungs and pleura". Department of Hospital surgery.
Description of the project: Topicality pyo-inflammatory lung disease is an urgent problem of thoracic surgery. The prevalence of non-specific diseases of the lungs and pleura 3 - 4 among other diseases, and the largest economic costs in the last decade, the frequency of acute pulmonary and pleural suppuration increases significantly. Numerous large and statistical summaries of recent years show an alarming increase in the incidence.
The aim of the project: the study of microcirculation in the course of various lungs and pleura.
Techniques and methods: The stages of the experiment:
- Diagnosis of a patient with of inflammatory diseases of lungs and pleura
- Taking blood from the vein before the surgical correction of valvular pathology, then blood collection .
- Using the appliance «LAK»
- Use of X-rays
- Pulmonary angiography
- Computer tomography
Role of the student: 1) Student with tutor will to collect clinical material. 2) The discussion of the results (student with tutor will develop the hypotheses, find proofs and confirmations). 3) Working with documents (looking for scientific article, work in the electronic library).
The students get their meals in a hospital canteen from Monday to Friday, 1 time per day.
Foreign students live in double- triple rooms of dormitory.
The Dorm for foreign students is situated in the centre of the city, near administrative and training buildings. Pass regime is organized in the dorm, protection establishment provides security. Food: lunch for bilateral exchanges 1 per day in the hospital. - See more at: http://en.russia.edu.ru/interbd/interdbv/1484/#sthash.3Txp8IHW.dpuf
Perm is an important railway junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway with lines radiating to Central Russia, the north part of the Urals, and the far east of Russia. Perm has two big railway stations - historical Perm-I and modernPerm-II. The Kama River is an important link in the unifying deep-water system of the European part of Russia. The river connects the city with European waterways. It is possible to ship cargo from the Kama river area to the sea ports of the White, Baltic, Azov, Black, and Caspian seas without reloading.
Perm is served by the international airport Bolshoye Savino, 16 km (9.9 mi) southwest.
Perm's public transit network includes tram, bus, trolleybus and city-railway routes.
Opera, ballet and drama theatre After St. Petersburg and Moscow,
Perm is Russia's leading city for opera, ballet and drama theatre. Not only has the city got a wide range of stages and theatres, its educational bodies like the Russian Academy of Theatre Art and Institute for Culture and Art as well as its many international relations in theatre performances and education still give Perm the name of theatre city. One of the most famous stages is the Chaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre Perm. Among its repertoire are internationally known performances (for example Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra, Aida, Cinderella) as well as Russian ones: most works of Tchaikovsky have been sta ged here. Since 1948 the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre has been on tours throughout the whole world, performing in countries such as UK, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany and China. During its history, the theatre has received numerous (inter)national prizes. Another leading stage is the Perm Academic Drama Theatre, founded in 1927. Like the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Acamedic Drama Theatre has staged the world’s most prestigious Drama plays (for instance Ostrovsky, Shakespeare, Gorky and Tolstoy) and has it won many prizes for its work.

In the same building, but a separate section, the Regional Museum of Loc al Studies and History (founded in 1890) is definitely worth a visit for those who are interested in the history and the culture of the Urals. The museum boasts a wide variety of armory, coinage, pottery, handicrafts, archeology and minerals. It also tells about the Permian period, the geological era in which the Urals were formed. The partly open-air artillery museum at the northern end of the city centre displays all generations of rocket and artillery (vehicles), as constructed in Perm, as well as a wide range of information of the history of the industry. Actually, the city is known for its large war industry ever since late 1800’s. All cannons and artillery of former Soviet Union as well as engines for Tupolev and MiG aircrafts were (and in less amounts still are) manufactured in Perm. The museum offers detailed information on its wide range of warfare. The outside part of the museum can be entered free of charge at any time. This museum is a part of our city excursion.
