Dear friends! Yekaterinburg is a city with long IFMSA history! Every year more and more medical students choose our city to participate in IFMSA exchange. And we are doing our best to offer you an experience you will never forget.  Yekaterinburg is the most rapidly developing city in Russia which can offer you everything you wish. As it is located on the Europe-Asian border you have a chance to feel the spirit of many different cultures. And of course Yekaterinburg played a mysterious role in the World History as Romanov Family was murdered here in 1917th and Russian Empire stopped existence. Then Soviet Union was found and it changed the World history. But all these reasons are far from being the most important for you to make a decision of coming here.  The reason is our local committee that follows IFMSA traditions and makes exchange students feel like home. IFMSA is a big family and we are happy to be a part of it. More than 30 exchange students every year are joining us and even when they come back home we are in touch. Sometimes our friendship becomes as strong as they come back again. And we are proud of it.

Yekaterinburg time is the time zone six hours ahead of UTC (UTC+6) and 2 hours ahead of Moscow Time (MSK+2).

Most of the major attractions in Yekaterinburg are concentrated in the center of the city. Some popular places for walks include central pedestrian street, full of shops and cafes, spacious benches, and genuine bronze sculptures and a fountain, which invariably attract those wishing to take a picture. Both sides of the Ploshad Lenina have gathered the most important sights, such as a monument to the founders of the city, the area of Labor, the Museum of Stone Carving Art, the building of the printing house for the Ural Worker, and others. Read our list of the top places to visit in Yekaterinburg, as well as some things you should definitely do while in Ural.

Plotinka in Yekaterinburg was built using Ural larch, a tree which does not rot in water, but only hardens and becomes stronger. It is one of the oldest buildings of its kind in Russia, and is a place of meetings and partings. Plotinka looks like a normal bridge: on the one side there is the river and on the other a city pond. It is here that all the interesting events happen: students come here to relax, lovers date and newlyweds come to take photos. In summer you can rent a catamaran or a boat, or feed the ducks. Nearby there are streets housing a museum of Fine Arts and Industry, Architecture and Nature of Ural. Plotinka is without doubt a favorite place for residents of the city, where mass festivals and public holidays are celebrated.

The Red Line Walking Tour

Red Line Walking Tour of Yekaterinburg is a pedestrian tourist route in Yekaterinburg’s historic center, designated by a special red marking on the asphalt. The route is 6.5km long and is a circle, so that you will return to exact same place where started. There are 35 interesting sights that are marked using specific numbers, and they range from monuments and merchant estates to entire streets and squares. Red Line Tour is a national project devised and implemented by the residents of the city. In 2011 the project stepped off of the pages of LiveJournal and got its own website. Pre-selected landmarks were presented to the public, and the voting process began on the website for the best and most interesting landmarks to be included.

Visit the Church on the Blood

The Church on the Blood is located on the site of the execution of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, who abdicated after the February Revolution. It is called the ‘bloody’ church because alongside the king’s wife, five children and their servants were also murdered. They were shot, cut into pieces and thrown away near the town. Today the church is dedicated to celebrate the memory of innocent victims, and is a major place of pilgrimage. The five-domed temple was made in a Russian-Byzantine style. The upper part of the church is used as a public temple, whereas the lower part hosts a museum which can be reached by a spiral staircase. For most citizens, the Church on the Blood is a popular place for walking and wedding photo sessions.
