elyabinsk is a city in Russia, located just to the east of the Ural Mountains, on Miass River. It is the administrative center of Chelyabinsk Oblast. This is a capital of the part of Russia that is called Southern Ural, located in Ural Mountains at the junction oftwo continents - Europe and Asia and at the border between Ural and Siberia.Chelyabinsk is a big transport hub (railways and roads, the Trans-Siberian Railway, Airport Chelyabinsk). A big industrial center with enterprises of metallurgy, machine building and metal, instrument, light and food industries. It has 5 universities and two academies. The city is divided into 7 districts.

Fortress Chelyaba, from which the city takes its name, was constructed on the site in 1736; the city was incorporated in 1781. Around 1900, it served as a center for the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. According to official statistics the population on 1 January 1913 was 45,000 inhabitants.

After the Finnish Civil War 1918, and the following decades some 15000 "Red" Finns defected into Soviet Union. Most of them were transferred to Chelyabinsk via railway. In 1938, during the great purges, most of them were executed. Their massgrave is located near the Zolonyi Gora's former gold mine, and today bears a small memorial.

During the Soviet industrialization of the 1930s, Chelyabinsk experienced rapid growth. Several industrial establishments, including the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant and the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, were built at this time. During World War II, Joseph Stalin decided to move a large part of Soviet factory production to places out of the way of the advancing German armies in late 1941. This brought new industries and thousands of workers to Chelyabinsk—still essentially a small city. Several enormous facilities for the production of T-34 tanks and Katyusha rocket launchers existed in Chelyabinsk, which became known as "Tankograd" (Tank City). Chelyabinsk was essentially built from scratch during this time. A small town existed before this, signs of which can be found in the centre of the city.

The landscape of Chelyabinsk Region is very various from lowlands and hilly plain to mountains range the peaks of which are over 1000 m. high. There are a lot of caves here. The central part is a high hilly plain and eastern part is West-Siberian Lowland. And it can't but pay your attention to the water area of Region. There are more than 3 thousands beautiful lakes here. Without any doubt Chelyabinsk Region is a region of lakes. Because of that geographical fact it was called “Ural Switzerland” Here you can find “the younger brother” of Lake Baikal - Turgoyak. The lake was called so due to it's pure water. There are several lakes in the city :Smolino, the First and The Second, Sineglazovo and Shershnevskoe lakes. Also there are a lot of rivers here. One of them is Miass River on which Chelyabinsk stands. It flows from Urals finally into the Arctic Ocean. The Leningrad bridge connects the "Ural" and "Siberian" bank of. Miass, so it is called “a bridge from the Urals to Siberia “ It goes without saying that the landscape is fairy because of mountains, caves, beautiful lakes.

Nowadays Chelyabinsk is an industrial, cultural, scientific and historical center of the Chelyabinsk Region. For sure there are theaters, opera, balet, organ hall, cinemas, museums, picture gallery, circus, cafes, restaurants, nightclubs, etc. There are 18 higher educational institutions in the city and among them our medical university – South Ural State Medical University including Ural State Medical Academy of Additional Education.

Twenty four big hospitals in Chelyabinsk and the Chelyabinsk region act as teaching hospitals. Since 1992 the University has its own clinical hospital, which is integrated into the educational and scientific complex of the Medical University. This clinic has an out-patient department, diagnostic unit, in-patient department and 16 specialized centers, for example: perinatal, family planning, lipid, diabetic foot and others.

There are two hospitals you will most probably attend. This are:

Chelyabinsk railway hospital

Back then The Railways was almost state inside the state. This is still partially true. They have their own hospitals, schools, resorts etc. Railway hospital serves predominantly personnel of the Russian Railroads (there is only one monopolistic state-run railway company). It serves any personnel - from janitors to logisticians.

Chelyabinsk regional clinical hospital

It serves the whole Chelyabinsk region (this administrative unit is called "Chelyabinsk oblast`"). Theoretically "whole region" includes the city itself too but statistically it resulted in predominance of patients from rural areas.

There is also a possibility you will be affiliated with the 1st municipal hospital which is located in the very centre of the city (it is more like historical centre now since actual city centre is shifting to the north-west). It serves people who are living in the certain area around it.

Research and research training activities at the South Ural State Medical University (SUSMU) are organized along the lines of the Divisions within each Department. Research activity follows the classic academic model insofar as it is driven by the initiatives of scholars and scientists in developing their own curiosity-driven or practice-based projects or working in collaboration with other research groups. Central Research Scientific Laboratory is University’s methodological center including several laboratories to carry out immunological and biochemical investigations.

SUSMU provides Research Exchanges for incoming students with scientific projects in the following fields:

Besides, there are canteens in hospitals where you may have your lunch. There are no restrictions or special rules, it is just come&buy. There are no tons of cafés around the hospitals but just took a bus to the centre and ride few stops and you will find plenty of them. Speaking about networks the most abundant fast food in Chelyabinsk is SubWay. Closest to your dormitory is right next to the Academy and not so far from both Regional and Railway hospitals. There is McDonalds next to the 1st Municipal Hospital. It is relatively unlikely you will find cafe where vegetarian food is being served. You have to rely on your common sense when choosing food. In some cafes vegetarian dishes are marked in menu. Also there are few places where you can by some special vegetarian goods. For example one is located in the "Nikitinskiy" shopping centre (under Revolution square). Halal food is available. Check the pack for the word “

You will be hosted at the dormitory that is usually called “prophylactorium”. It is dedicated to the students on residency and students doing their PhD but the building itself is placed just next to the regular student dormitory. From your dorm you can reach Railway Hospital by walking in 10 minutes. Regional Hospital is in 2 public transport stops (or 20 minutes by walking).Central square (Revolution square) is located within 10 minutes of bus ride from that dormitory (trolleys
There are buses, trolleybuses, trams and marshrutkas in the Chelyabinsk. What marshrutkas are? At first it started as a routed shared taxi - minibus that has fixed route but will stop at any point of that route on demand. But now it is more like just private bus companies. The fact that these buses can sometimes drop passengers while waiting green light on the crossroads serves a reminder of the times of the past now. Prices: marshrutka - 18 roubles, all minibuses are in this category, bus (big ones) - 15 roubles, trolleybus, tram - 15 roubles. In the trolleybuses, buses and trams you have to buy a paper tickets for a current ride from a conductor. Fee is fixed and not dependent on travel distance or time. Month-lasting plastic cards are available but they are quite expensive (2150 roubles) and are not valid for marshrutkas.Inmarshrutkas passenger have to pass money to the driver - usually people give it to the passenger who sits right in front of them - and then one by one – to the driver. They accept bonds and will give you change (still driving the bus, they have three hands yes). Also you have to warn driver when you want to get off - just say "naostanovke" (literally "(Please stop you bus) on the(next) stop") – when marshutka will be on it's way to the stop you need. Note that drivers tend not to open rear door if they don't see anybody willing to use it. If you have been unspotted and rear door remains closed, say "zadnuyuotkroyte". Considering said marshrutka may be not the most convenient transport for foreigners here. Public transport works till 22:00 but after 21:00 it becomes rarer. Marshrutkas are last to stop working.

We organize for students interesting historical tours around Chelyabinsk, Welcome dinner and Farewell party, National food and drinking party, visit together theatres and cinemas, organize mountain trips, trips to other cities nearby (Yekaterinburg, Perm, Ufa), depends on the season – different sport events: skiing, skating, cycling, roll skating and so on.

Theaters, opera, ballet, organ hall, cinemas, museums, picture gallery, circus, nightclubs are possible to visit all year for sure. The prices are much cheaper than in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
