OVERVIEW

Xalapa, state capital of Veracruz, is located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, at 1400 meters over the sea level. It is known as the “Athens of Veracruz” and “The city of flowers".


Although it is the capital state, and have about 457,614 people, is a city with a lot of provincial flavor, which cultural reputation is recognized national and internationally. There is a huge student population that is attracted by the university´s prestige, and so it creates a very cultural and interesting environment.


It has a lot of flora and fauna, a very nice weather and incredible warmth of its people. There are activities for everyone, theatre and concerts, sporting activities, extreme sports in it's surroundings, and a very large gastronomy.

UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS

Since 1974 The Faculty of Medicine Campus Xalapa from “Universidad Veracruzana" (UV) has been characterized by their hard work in the academic training of medical students. In the last years students curriculums has been in a process of transitions from a rigid model to a flexible one in which gives greater autonomy to the student. In order to combine theoretical knowledge with abilities and aptitudes, the clinical practice starts after the second year and follows the remaining five years.

UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS

Xalapa is a city of concentration in what health concerns about; most of the patients from the center region of the state are channeled to our hospitals. The Centro de Alta Especialidad (Center of High Specialtry)  "Dr. Rafael Lucio"(CEMEV) will be your host hospital for the performance of the clinical practice; with a short history but with thousand merits, has became in one of the most important hospitals in center and east the country. Count with several medical specialties evaluated and certificated that will warranty that during your visit you are going to have attention and a quality training.

Students are hosted in committee member´s house or, if it is possible, will rent an apartment the closest to the hospital.

TRANSPORTATION
  • Getting there: You can arrive to Xalapa by bus or plane and we always are going to received you as incoming in the airport or in the main bus station. Just only please inform us about your arrival date and hour!


    By plane:

    By van from Mexico’s city airport:

    In Terminal 1 in front of “National Arrivals” you can take a van of ADO service to Xalapa’s bus station. It is located near the car ramp that leads to the hotel Camino Real, anyway you can ask to a policeman or in an information point about ADO van to Xalapa. The ticket cost $564MX (prices could change), the travel time 4:30 hrs.

    By van from Veracruz’ airport:

    If you arrive in Veracruz´s Airport which is near to Xalapa you can get direct transport in ADO service van with a travel time of 2:00 hrs and cost about $ 300.00MX

    By bus:

    If you decide travel from Mexico City to Xalapa in bus. You should arrive to the East Mexico City Bus Station (TAPO). You have to talk with your LEO because; maybe he can help you to arrive to this station. If you get to Mexico City, you can grab a bus to Xalapa´s terminal at a cost about $400.00MX in a travel time of 4 hrs.

    Getting around:

    Inside the city of Xalapa, the public transport is cheap with different routes that can easily transport you safely, with a price of $6.00MX for students and $9.00MX for general public.

    The taxis are also a good option because they’re cheap, $25-$30MX is the common price, of course it depends the route.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
The Social Program depends on the season year of interchange and perception of incomings. In our city there’s always something to do, concerts, expositions, parks to visit or just a students’ party (and we know how to party).

But Xalapa is not the only city in the state, we also have anothers cities close, and also more LC's. We have our friends of the LC of Veracruz City (CEFMUV) and also from the LC of Ciudad Mendoza (EMUVCO). We organize a Regional Social Program for you. One weekend we'll send you to Veracruz or Ciudad Mendoza, and you'll be recieved by the LEO and the SCOPE team of the LC to stay the whole weekend with them. Our objective is give to you a better experience around our beautiful state.

During the summer, you can take a trip to other states (Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Puebla). Moreover, Xalapa has an excellent location for ecotourism. It depends what you wanna do.
MUST SEE
The weather is humid and varied, with a maximum temperature of 34.3 ° C and minimum from 3-10 ° C in the morning. The city's altitude ranges from 1.250 m to 1.560 m. It has an average temperature of 18 ° C and a humid temperate climate. It's annual average rainfall is 1,509.1 mm. The snowfalls are common in Perote, Veracruz during winter (never in our city).
We can have all kinds of weather in one day, so don’t forget to bring an umbrella, sunblock, sunglasses, tennis, sweater or a jacket.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

All students must wear appropriate clothes for the hospital, closed white shoes, white shirts and pants, white coat and stethoscope, also bring your surgical scrub for enter the surgeries Don’t forget your IFMSA logbook/notebook, your LEO must give it to you to fill it about your practice in the hospital and in order to receive the certificate.

The clinical rotation is from Monday to Friday, the time can be varied depending on the area, but never more than 8 hrs per day. You can do nighshifts if you decide it. Saturday and Sunday are free for social program.

Not everybody in the hospital speak English, so you have to speak basic Spanish for having communication in the hospital and with patients. But don’t worry we’ll always be there to help!
