OVERVIEW

Also known as 'city of the mountains' Monterrey is the capital and largest city of Nuevo Leon state. As the third-largest metropolitan area in Mexico; the city serves as a commercial center in the north of the country with more than 5 million people. Monterrey offers so many varied attractions for adventure and vertigo lovers. Having what’s considered as the second city in economic importance of the country, it also offers a complete tourism infrastructure opened to receive the most experienced and demanding travelers with a wide cultural and entertainment offer.

The city has been developing over the years and today it is a very important business, industrial and economic center. It is rich in spectacular landscapes, green areas and historical monuments. Rich in history and culture, Monterrey is often regarded as the most developed city in the entire country.

The mountains surrounding Monterrey contain many canyons, trails and roads that cross deserts and forests

Climate is semi-arid and is considered one of the warmest cities in Mexico. Summers are generally hot, spring and fall temperate, and winters mild.

UNIVERSITY AND HOSPITALS

The Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León is the most important public education institution in our state. In 1952, the most important public hospital (at the time and still) “Hospital Civil” was donated to our university. Therefore, the administration duties of the hospital were given to our honorable Faculty of Medicine. Furthermore, this challenging but extremely life changing event helped the creation of the most important hospital in the whole Northeast region of Mexico, “Hospital Universitario ‘Dr. Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez”.

In addition of representing one of the public health columns in our state it also holds countless of medical education opportunities, almost all of the clinical practice in our curriculum takes place in our Hospital Universitario.

RESEARCH PROJECTS AND LABS

All of the research projects take place in our Faculty of Medicine that is located just beside our hospital. Boarding and lodging remains the same for both SCOPE and SCORE students. We have active projects (and keep updating them) in the following domains:

Embryology

Biochemistry

Genetics

Physiology

Immunology

BOARDING

We offer one meal per working day in the hospital cafeteria of our hospital. The administration of our hospital hires a private company for the meal service for all interns, residents and exchange students which ensures an outstanding quality level of the food provided. The student is able to choose between different options of main meal and portions depending on the day.

LODGING

You'll be welcomed to stay at our amazing students Residence, which has all the facilities you might need during your exchange. The Residence has a capacity of over 70 students, with more than 7 rooms and two main areas for men and women. It has amenities such as a kitchen, library room, common areas (living room, grill patio, TV room), an equipped gym and lots of places to have fun! The Residence is located 5 min walk away from the University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine and counts with security guards service 24 hrs a day!

TRANSPORTATION

Our city counts with an international airport (Mariano Escobedo International Airport) that has direct flights from plenty of airline hubs such as Mexico City, Houston, Atlanta, Panamá, New York and much more.

For moving around the city, we have two metro lines that will take you to the most important places in the city center for a really cheap price. If you are not in the mood of walking Uber is the safest choice for moving around and has significantly lower prices than the same service in other cities.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
If you are looking to have a blast in addition to having a fruitful academical rotation we suggest you come in summer or winter months where you’ll be sharing this awesome experience with 10 – 40 students from all around the world. The social program varies between seasons but it always includes some kind of physical activity in part of the national initiative of #HealthyExchanges.
