Welcome to Chihuahua! The most beautiful city of the northern part of Mexico is ready to give all the incomings the highest doses of fun!

Chihuahua is a state in north western Mexico with a mainland area of 247,087 square kilometers (95,400.8 sq mi), slightly larger than the United Kingdom. It is surrounded by the states of Sonora to the west, Sinaloa to the south-west, Durango to the south and Coahuila to the east, and by the U.S. states of Texas to the north-east and New Mexico to the north. Chihuahua is the largest state in Mexico by area and is consequently known under the nickname El Estado Grande ("The Big State"). Although Chihuahua is primarily identified with the Chihuahuan Desert for namesake, it has more forests than any other state in Mexico. Due to its variant climate the state boasts a large variety of fauna and flora. The state is mostly characterized by rugged mountain terrain and wide river valleys. The Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, an extension of the Rocky Mountains, dominates the state's terrain and is home to the state's greatest attraction, Las Barrancas del Cobre, or Copper Canyon, a spectacular canyon system larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona U.S.. On the slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains (around the regions of Casas Grandes, Cuauhtémoc and Parral), there are vast prairies of short yellow grass, the source of the bulk of the state's agricultural production. Most of the 3.2 million inhabitants (2005) live along the Rio Grande Valley and the Conchos River Valley. Chihuahua is  the 11th most populated city in the country. Its size offers you a wide variety of landscapes ranging from desert and nature reserves with a variety of flora and fauna to forest vegetation, temperate grasslands and the intricate and imposing Sierra Madre Occidental mountains that blend in with the horizon. All of this natural wonder coexists with industrial and business cities.

Chihuahua has a wide range of activities for you with first-class services. You will experience the adventure of a lifetime in its caves and canyons.  We cannot forget about its nightlife in which you will find something that will match your preferences.

Enjoy visiting the historical city center, the majestic Cathedral, the Nombre de Dios grottoes, Revolution Park and its great museums all over the city.

Hospitals in Chihuahua

Doctors and nurses in public hospitals in Chihuahua such as Hospital General Dr. Salvador Zubirán are excellent-trained, and most of them are willing to share their experience and knowledge. They have always open doors for the IFMSA Clerkship Students from 8:00 to 15:00 approximately and you´ll be free the rest of your day.

The practical training period for students (maybe 98%) is developed in Public Hospitals since that's where almost every Mexican looks for medical attention. So you will find every kind of medical cases going from the easiest one to the weirdest and most complicated one, meaning that it's a great chance to learn a lot!.
But we cannot forget about the private hospitals of our region. Hospital Christus Muguerza del Parque or Hospital Ángeles are two of the most equipped hospitals in the state. Therefore, you will also experience the technological part of the Mexican medicine.

Universidad autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH) facultad de medicina y ciencias biomédicas (FMyCB)

One of the best universities in Mexico with excellent academic grades, also our new campus provide all the requirements for the med students to develop your abilities, we offers you excellent and completes  laboratories as embryology, pharmacology, histology, physiology, parasitological and microbiology, also we have renowned researchers working all the year in new projects.

Most hospitals provide food and drinks, or if it is not possible at the hospital, at our Medical School Cafeteria and most of the time the students (who you'll be staying with) also provide breakfast and dinner.

Most of students are placed in host families or student's houses, so that way you´ll see from the inside the way of living of a Mexican family and a medical Mexican Student.

Inside the city the easiest and cheapest way to travel is by bus, the same thing if you want to travel between cities or states (long distances). This city also has Uber services in case you wanted to use them. We also have cheap airlines in Mexico such as Viva Aerobus and Volaris. Interjet, American eagle, Aeromexico and Continental air lines also opper in International Airport General Roberto Fierro Villalobos.

We don't have an established social program for our clerkships incomings, but you will not get bored, there will always be somewhere to go or something to do! We, as a Local Committee, try to present the best image of the Northern Mexican culture to our incomings. That is why we plan every single social program taking into account the incomings preferences and the Active Members spare time.

Because it is such a competitive market, nightclubs, bars and restaurants are constantly reinventing themselves and places that are packed one weekend may be deserted the next. For that reason, it would probably be better to ask your LEO about the social program. A trip that can never miss is to Sierra Tarahumara and Copper Canyon! We, sometimes, organize a visit to Samalayuca’s Dunes Desert as well.

The most recommended places in Chihuahua are La sierra Tarahumara including the Cooper Canyon because is one of the most beautiful places in Mexico (considered as the third Mexican wonder); Chihuahua is the only state in  Mexico with traintravels (CHEPE train).
You need know the culture of Chihuahua (The biggest state of Mexico), know the tarahumara culture, enjoy the snow in december and January.

Due to its extreme weather, Chihuahua can reach very high or very low temperature, so as a recommendation, talk to your LEO/LORE about the weather during your exchange month. If the student will arrive earlier or before the according dates, the AF or staying longer please inform the LEO/LORE by email. For more information write to or
