Santa Maria del Monte(or Sacro Monte - 883 meters sea level) is one of the Prealpi rises, north of Vares. It was a municipality until 1927 before being absorbed by Varese. It is part of the Parco Regionale Campo dei Fiori. It dominates the entrance to the valleys leading towards the north and Switzerland. It offers a striking view on the mountain chain of Alpi Marittime, Cozie, Graie, Pennine, Lepontine and Retiche and Prealpi. The Po plain spreads to the south, overlooked by the northern Apennine mountains and by several lakes: Varese, Comabbio, Monate, Maggiore. Santa Maria del Monte, property of UNESCO, is a place of Marian faith and worship. Its origins are evident in the Romanesque crypt under the high altar of the Sanctuary and in a prachment dated from 922.
Varese is called "the city garden" because there is a lot of garden and park to visit. There also very beautiful lakes where you can swim and make picnic.
Sacro Monte also counts among its precious art works two museums: the Baroffio and Sanctuary Museum, recently renewed which houses the ancient collections donated in 1929 by Barone Baroffio Dell'Aglio. The Museum offers paintings, sculptures, illuminated codices, coins, medals, pieces of pottery, frontals and paraments donated over the centuries and the section of modern sacred art. ThePogliaghi Museum, which is being renewed at present, is situated in the Villa where Milanese sculptor L. Pogliaghi lived until his death in 1950. It contains evidence of the artist's ecletic life, paintings of the 16th and 17th century, archeological remains, Renaissance and Baroque pieces of art and Egyptian sacrophagi, the Shah of Persia's room and the cast of the Door of Milan Cathedral.
Campo dei Fiori offers the visitor trekking paths along the marked trails such as the 3V Via Verde Varesina leading to the Orino Fortress. The city is equiped with tennis courts, golf courses, many modern swimming pools, a Sports Centre, a Leisure Centre (for ice-skating and swimming), a stadium and a Racecourse. Rowing is practised on the lake and there is a Gliding field nearby. Riding is also practised.
Not much remains of ancient traditions and folklore. The most important event is the bonfire at Motta on 16/17 January to celebrate Saint Anthony. The of "Giobia", on the last Thursday of January, is an ancient festivity, informally celebrated in various ways according to different places in the province.
