Messina is the third largest city on the island of Sicily. 
It has a population of 240,000 inhabitants and about 500,000 in the metropolitan area. 
It is located at the North-East corner of Sicily, on the Strait of Messina, which divides Sicily and the mainland.
Founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC, Messina was originally called Zancle, from the Greek.

If you are injured you can go to the hospital for medical treatment. If you need 
an ambulance, call 118 (First Aid Ambulance).
You will be assigned to a supervising doctor who will guide you during your 
Practice starts at 8:00 – surgical departments and 9:00 – clinical departments
Likely more than one person will be assigned to the same department (up 
to 4 people, depending on the department). Practice usually finishes around 
14:00. Working days are Mo-Fri.
Bring your own scrub (especially if you go in a surgery department),
white coat, stethoscope, lamp (especially if you go in a department of 
neurology, emergency or anesthesiology), as well as a pair of shoes 
(sneakers or slippers) only for surgery department (that means also anaesthesia and gynaecology). 
There is NO COLOR CODE. You can wear any color you like.

It’s the best social program EVER.
There will be 50 people going wild TOGETHER, needing to relax after a tiring and stressful day in the hospital.
The city of Messina has beautiful beaches and seaside clubs, ancient city center and beautiful museums. Internationally famous places like Taormina or 
the Aeolian islands are really handy (30 minutes away)... that means this will be the best experience of your life.
Last year (2014) our social program was like this:

The Cathedral of Messina
The Cathedral of Messina, dedicated to the Assumption. Located in the historic center of Messina, where the prospect with the wide facade and 
bell tower of the Cathedral Square. The origins of the Messina Cathedral date back to Norman Roger I of Sicily and was wanting to the foundation. 
The original structures of the sacred building, down through the centuries, 
have been subject to frequent change. This was almost always due to earthquakes that destroyed the city, in fact, with the 1908 earthquake, the 
building collapsed almost completely. Despite the destruction in the Cathedral of Messina is the monumental building of interest in the City. The structure 
has a tower of particular historic and artistic interest, considered the largest and most complex mechanical clock and astronomical world, as many went to 
the Dome destruction. The bell tower dates back to 1908 and was designedon the designs of the old one. About 90 meters high, shaped like a tower, 
contains a magnificent animated clock that entertains tourists at noon, with statues of historical (as Dina and Clarenza) and animals like the cock and lion 
move accompanied by background music of 'Ave Maria. The church is the first largest in Sicily after Palermo Cathedral.
The Fountain of Neptune
The Fountain of Neptune is a monumental fountain in the city of Messina. 
The original position of the Fountain of Neptune was with his back to the 
sea to symbolize the God Neptune blesses Messina. Today, the Fountain of 
Neptune was moved further north and rotated with the sea. The god Neptune, 
holding his feet chained to the monster Scylla and Charybdis, statues that 
symbolize the strength and morale of the city.
Regional Museum of Messina
The Museum, founded in 1806, developed in thirteen rooms that surround a 
courtyard where they placed various architectural fragments and sculptures 
from the ancient churches and palaces of the city 'before the earthquake 
of 1908. The museum illustrates the figurative culture expressed by the 
city through the centuries (XII-XVIII), paintings by famous artists such as 
Antonello, Girolamo Alibrandi, by Polidoro and Caravaggio, who were the tips 
of emerging artistic culture Messina. Collections. At the core of the collections 
from the Museum have been added after the earthquake of 1908, paintings 
and sculptures that once belonged to damaged buildings and then killed.
The Vara
La Vara is a 14 meters high structure made topping several statues one on 
another. It is slid on the wet streets, pulled by more than a thousand devotees 
pulling ropes attached to it, each more than 110m long. The Vara moves 
without steering and brakes. Until 1860 all the characters were living. 15th 
August the most important religious festival in Messina and almost every 
“Messinesi” attend to it! By midnight you can move to Cristo Re for enjoying 
the fireworks.
