Foggia is a city and mucipality of Puglia, Italy, capital of the province of Foggia. Foggia is the main city of a plain called ''Tavoliere'', also know as the ''granary of italy''.

The name derives from the Latin Foggia ''fovea'', which means ''pit'', referring to the pits where the grain was stored. Argos Hippium (in Greek).

Hospitals of Foggia: history

In the 19th century there were two hospitals in Foggia: Umberto I, for men and Vittorio Emanuele II, for women.

In 1930th the ''Lorenzo d' Avanzo'' hospital was built (dedicated to this colonel, who died in Africa in 1940) for the treatment of tuberculoisis. The hospital reform has transformed into a provincial hospital, specializing in pneumology and respiratory diseases.

In 1962 Luigi Turtur became the Chaiman of  the Board of Directors of the 'Ospedali Riunuti', born from the merger of the two old hospitals, Umberto I and Vittorio Emanuele II. IN 1969, 300 people were affected by food poisoning and the perfect ordered the opening of this hospital.

the Ospedali Riuniti were inaugured in 1972 and in 1997 they became a mixed company, for the presence of the University of Bari were founded in Foggia.

During the academic year 1993/1994 the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery was born and with the Law of 08/05/1999 the University of Foggia was officially founded.

The 2012 Statue converted Faculty in the departmentsof: Agricultural Sciences, Humanieties and Cultural Heritage, Educational Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Experimental Sciences, Medical and Surgical Sciences.

The specialization scools available are: phatological anatomy, anesthesia and resuscitation, surgery of the digestive system, general surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiovascular system patients, diseases of the respiratory sistem, infectious diseases, occupational medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, forensic medicine, nephrology, neurology, ophtalmology, orthopedics, ear-nose and throat, pediatrics, psychiatry, diagnostic radiology, rheumatology, urology.


Laboratories in hospitals are: pharmacology, biochemistry, nephrology, human anatomy, medical genetics, clinical phatology, histology, psycology.

A  shuttle service to Bari ''Karol Vojtyla'' airport in Foggia (stops at the train station or Foggia ''Gino Lisa'').

Weather: Mediterranean climate, but the distance from the sea promotes thermal excursions and continental features. Snow is rare in winter, not rainy, very abundant. Summer is hot and dry, or with hot wind. In sping there are cold and rainy days, others are more and are sunny.
